Review:

Perhaps the greatest anime ever made. Stunning animation, great story and powerful music make this required viewing and ownership for every kind of animation fan. Akira is often credited with igniting the anime craze in America. It has been cited numerous times as an inspiration by many film makers, artists and writers. It's dark and brooding vision of the future is complete and brilliantly realized. Many of it's images - a glowing, neon-lit Tokyo; Kaneda marching towards his cycle; the cape-clad Tetsuo leering menacingly - have all become pop culture icons of animation.

This is a film that engenders strong feelings and passions. Those who view always have an opinion after watching and though there are many different interpretations one truth holds true for every viewer: it is great.

Volume 2: "2001 Pioneer Release" Plot Summary:

Based on the manga of Katsuhiro Otomu (Akira, Domu, Rojin Z), Akira is set in a 21st Century Tokyo. A great war, 30 years previous, has left society stratified and violent. In this world of roaming teenage motorcycle gangs, addicts, religious fanatics and corrupt officials, a secret experiment dealing with the hidden powers within Man on selected individuals begins to spiral out of control. Stunning animation and score portray Otomu's vision in exacting detail. This is a watershed film that defines anime.

This new release features a restored image. enhanced sound, many DVD extras, and, most importantly, a new English translation (for both the subtitles and dub) with the dubbing completely redone with new actors. It is far superior to the original 1988 release.
