Voices of a Distant Star is an anime touchstone; the holy grail; the sword in the stone. It is that oft-dreamt but never realized fantasy that "I will make my own animated movie someday all by myself." Now, thanks to the efforts of the prodigiously talented Makoto Shinkai, that dream has become reality. Voices of a Distant Star is a fantastic effort spectacularly achieved.
Some may quibble with the quality of the character drawing or the pacing of story but those are minor comments when comparing this film against similar efforts from mainline studios. The attention to detail and the lush use of color are both remarkable and admirable. But more importantly, I predict that Voices of a Distant Star will leave its mark as the inspiration for a new generation of animators that find their voices in creating their own works, following the trail blazed by Mr. Shinkai.
Volume 1: "Voices of a Distant Star" Plot Summary:
Mikako and Noboru are two teenagers living in Japan in the year 2046. An alien invader is threatening the Earth and, like so many times before, the youth of Japan are called upon to pilot huge combat robots to repel the invasion. But this time, it is the girl, Mikako, who is off to battle while Noboru, the lovelorn boy, is left waiting behind.
The added twist is that their only line of communication is via text messages on their cellphones. And as Mikako's fleet moves further and further away from Earth, the time lag and the effects of near light-speed travel puts even more strain on their relationship.
