1: The Movie
The film opens on the night of the summer star festival on Jurai. A young prince Yosho meets up with a young girl who presents him with a special gift of a magical music box. But, before he can accept the gift, guards from the place descend upon the two children. One sweeps away the prince while the other chases down and then slashes the young girl with a light sword. The girl disappears in a blinding light only to reform as a demon. The guards banish her, and she retreats from sight.
Time passes, and it is now present day Japan. It is the middle of summer, and the girls are going about their daily chores. Up on the hill, Tenchi is tending to his mother's grave. When he finishes, he heads down the temple stairs towards home. Along the way, he senses a presence and turns around to find a girl sitting on the steps. She leaps up and lunges towards him crying, "daddy".
Tenchi and the girl head back to the house and as they arrive, Ryoko and Ayeka rush out to greet him. They are shocked at the presence of the girl, whose name is Mayuka. They demand answers and poor Tenchi has none. This leads to Ryoko chasing the girl around the house and finally, frightened and cornered, she lashes back at Ryoko.
To everyone's amazement, she produces a light hawk sword, just like Tenchi's. Yosho rushes in just in time and prevents any further fighting. Drawn by the commotion, Washu appears and snatches a sample of the girl's hair for testing. They all then sit down for lunch.
After lunch, Tenchi decides to take a bath while the rest of the gang slips outside to enjoy some watermelon. But, before he can head to the bathhouse, Washu tracks him down. She catches him eavesdropping on the girls and speculating which one of them ends up his lucky bride and the mother to Mayuka. Washu informs Tenchi that there is no doubt that he is the father but she cannot determine the mother. Tenchi heads off to the bath while Washu shares her finds with the girls.
In the bathhouse, Tenchi enjoys a brief but peaceful moment before it is broken by Mayuka, who joins him in the bath. A thoroughly embarrassed Tenchi stammers and blushes as the naked Mayuka chases him around the pool. Soon enough, Ryoko and Ayeka, having noticed that Mayuka was missing, show up.
Another chase breaks out and Yosho has to come to the rescue again. This time, Ryoko and Mayuka are not willing to set aside differences and things escalate. They reach their peak when Ryoko carries Mayuka high up into the sky and then drops her. Ryoko returns to the house and pleads innocence when asked her whether she knows Mayuka's whereabouts.
Darkness falls and still no sign of Mayuka. Finally, Yosho appears with Mayuka in tow and explains that he found her at the top of a tall cedar.
That night, Yuzuha, the demon that created Mayuka, appears to Mayuka and commands her to bring Tenchi to her. Mayuka sneaks into Tenchi's room and nearly achieves her mission before Ryoko, Yosho and Washu come rushing into the room. Ryoko demands that Mayuka explain herself but she can't and Mayuka goes running off into the night. The group then sets out to find the girl.
The first to discover her is Sasami. But, unfortunately, Yuzuha has seized control of Mayuka and uses her to capture Sasami. The others arrive just in time to seen Sasami dragged down into the realm of darkness. Yuzuha tells them that they will have to come after her if they ever want Sasami back. Tenchi and Ryoko volunteer for the duty.
They enter the realm and find themselves in a room filled with children's toys. But, these toys are alive and armed. Tenchi and Ryoko battle their way out of the room only to find themselves plummeting down a shaft. At the bottom, they find a huge Christmas tree with Sasami imprisoned on it. Yuzuha welcomes them to her party and then orders Mayuka to attack.
Ryoko and Mayuka battle, with Mayuka transforming into a battle mode.Eventually, Ryoko and Tenchi manage to set Sasami free. Sasami then pleads with Mayuka to remember the good time they had together and their plans to spend Christmas together as a family. This breaks Yuzuha's hold over the girl, and she turns on the demon. Mayuka manages to wound Yuzuha but she is destroyed in the process. Ryoko, Sasami and Tenchi use the opportunity to make a break for it. But they don't get far.
Above ground, Ayeka and Yosho have been trying to discover a way to help. They realize that if they can get a branch from a Tree of Light that would allow Tenchi to use his powers while he was in the realm of darkness. They find the branch and Ayeka uses it to project herself into the space. It is none too soon.
Yuzuha has trapped the escapees and assumed the form of giant winged demon. Tenchi generates the light hawk sword and strikes. As he connects, he "sees" the memories of Yuzuha and realizes that she is acting out of hurt over a love that could never be. He then passes out.
When he awakes, he finds himself back home, with the family surrounding him. He confronts his grandfather about the vision he saw but Yosho only responds philosophically. They all miss poor Mayuka.
But, then Washu says she can restore her but only if everyone is in complete agreement. They all look at Ryoko who gives her blessing. During the closing credit, thumbnail-style animations play depicting the rebirth of Mayuka and the promised first Christmas. This is where the movie ends.
