Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko is a diamond in the rough. It has fun, well-crafted characters and nice balance of anime action with a touch of self-aware humor. This particular outing of Starship Girl suffers from the environment in which it was created. The mid to late '90s was glutted with numerous "girl team" animes (Battle Athletes and Metal Fighter Miku spring to mind) and Yohko draws on those same themes.
After the release of the OAV series, Yamamoto Yohko was retooled and re-released as a series and became a big hit. Maybe if we are all good and don't tease our little sisters, Right Stuf or another producer might bless us with that series.
But back to the Yohko we have at hand. The animation is strong (upper middle of the pack) and the concept, though well-worn, is invigorated by the sassy attitude of Yohko herself. All in all, Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko will leave you happy that you spent the time watching it.
Volume 1: "The Perfect Collection" Plot Summary:
In the future, disputes that use to lead to war are now settled by huge, complex races in space. Teams from each side compete in powerful spaceships to determine who will own the planet in question or some other issue.
Until now, the Terran team, though they have superior technology, have been consistently losing. The high command demands results and enterprising engineer settles on an unorthodox solution: recruit pilots from Earth's past.
He then sets about assembling his team and although they are good, they are still missing that one crucial element that will put them over the top.
Enter Yohko Yamamoto, teenage girl and video game player extraordinaire. Yohko has an uncanny ability to win and a huge amount of self-confidence. With Yohko on their side, Terran is destined to win! ...Right?
