The case for Spaceship Agga Ruter proudly proclaims "From the creative genius behind Tenchi Muyo!" - it's a good guess that the "creative genius" is not feeling so smart after this work hit the OAV market.

Spaceship Agga Ruter does have many of the familiar Tenchi elements - organic spacecraft, space-born cops, a meowing cat creature and plenty of baths - but it is all in a dojinshin manner. For those unfamiliar with the term, dojinshin is the name for the practice of creating amateur versions of popular manga titles. Often, these fan-created tales take well-known characters and put them in situations that they would not have encountered otherwise - such as adult interactions. The art can be amazing or the stories compelling but you are always aware that this is not the "real deal."

The same holds true for Spaceship Agga Ruter. The animation is by AIC, who created and animated Tenchi, so it has the look but it is not of the same quality and the story just stinks.

Volume 1: "Troublemaker" Plot Summary:

Taiyo and Kei are the only two inhabitants aboard the Agga Ruter. Kei found Taiyo years earlier as an infant, the only surviror of a massacre, and has raised him ever since. Unfortunatly or fortunately, depending on your point of view, all he has been taught are the skills of love making. Otherwise, he is dumber than a brick.

Jannis is a pirate in search of the Agga Ruter. There is a hefty bounty awaiting whoever brings the ship in. She finds the craft but is completely bewildered by the baffling stupidity of Taiyo. Thinks look grim until Jannis "discovers" Taiyo's "hidden talents."
