Episode 1: Sunset and Steel Frames - Part I
It's another busy afternoon in downtown Tokyo. Yume, a mage in training, has just arrived and is overwhelmed by the sights and sounds. She stands at the busy intersection, waiting for the light to change so that she may course the street. In her mind, to relieve the stress, she imagines the entire area underwater and dolphins frolicking about.
The light changes and Yume is jostled by the Tokyo crowd. She is knocked down by a young man and another young gentleman comes to her rescue. He helps her up and then assists her in crossing the street. Taking her heavy suitcase, he heads across and Yume follows, but she trips and falls midway. The crossing signal is about to change and as she attempts to get up, a car comes speeding right at her. Suddenly, the car flies straight up into the air, along with all of the other traffice on the street. The young man and other spectators are amazed at the sight. "Gently, gently", Yume murmurs to herself as she lowers the cars back down to the ground.
"I've never met a mage before.", the young man tells Yume as he escorts her to the subway station. Yume explains that she is just a trainee. The man asks why she didn't just use her power to cross the street in the first place and she does not answer. They find the right train and Yume boards. She tries to offer the man a gift for helping her but he politely refuses. The doors close and the train rolls out of the station, but not before Yume uses her powers to cause the man's shirt to suddenly fill with Yen bills.
Aboard the train, Yume pulls out a book and reviews it. It is her guidebook and the first task is to get to her mentor's home without using magic. Yume sighs, realizing that she has already failed. The train eventually arrives at her stop and she exits. She asks a shopkeeper for directions, and after buying a pack of gum, heads on out.
Quickly, she reaches her destination, which to her surprise, is a restaurant. The place seems empty and as she looks in tentatively, a young man with his shirt pulled up, revealing his bare chest, confronts her. His name is Kera and he soon figures out that Yume is her to meet the restaurant's owner, Masami Oyamada. He leads Yume upstairs and into an apartment. He calls out for the owner but no one is there.
It is then that Masami comes walking down the stairs from an upper level. He is a tall dark-haired man who appears to be coming fresh from the shower. Yume is stunned, having expected a female instructor, both from the name and from tradition. Coupled with the sight of two bare male chests, it all becomes too much for Yume and she nearly collapses, pleading with eyes clenched shut for them to put on clothes.
Now dressed, Masami formally greets his new apprentice. He asks for Yume's guidebook, and with a gesture, causes a file to hover in midair above the book. Masami recognizes Yume's mother as a legendary master mage and he comments on the fact and Yume responds that she is flattered but her mother does not use her power anymore. Masami then explains that they will go to the mage office tomorrow, register and then they will train for the following month. It will all cumulate in a final licensing test.
Masami then asks for Yumi's contact information - her cell phone and boarding house number. Ashamed, Yumi explains that her home is in an "out of service" area, so she does not have a cell phone and she, having noticed that the guidebook told her that her mentor's home was available for boarders and having assumed that Masami was female, she had planned on staying there. Masami reassures that nothing is wrong and he shows her a pretty room on the top floor. She accepts and then gives a gift to Masami, thanking him for his generosity. Later she calls her mother and informs her that she has arrived safe. As a parting gesture, she leaves a note and a few coins to pay for the call.
Later that night, Yume ventures downstairs to see where Masami and Kera are. She enters the restaurant and finds it hopping - filled with people, colorful lights and loud salsa music. Masami spies her from behind the bar and Kera confronts Yume while holding a tray of drinks. Kero tells Yume that she cannot be in the bar since 17 year olds are under age. The only way she can be in the place is if she dances. Yume smiles weakly and leaves.
She returns upstairs and decides to take a shower. As she dries off and tries to find something to eat, the doorbell rings. It's a pizza delivery man. He explains that pizza has already been paid for and Yume accepts the pie. She places it on the kitchen table, opens it and inhales the aroma. This triggers a memory of the first time she ate pizza with her family and this brings tears to her eyes. She tells herself to be strong, eats a single slice of the pie and goes to bed.
The next morning, she awakes just in time to see Kera leaving. He has just gotten off work and is heading home to sleep. She goes down to the kitchen and finds Masami making a full breakfast. Yume asks if he has just finished working as well and he tells her that he finished earlier. They eat the breakfast and then prepare to head out.
Masami has planned for them to go to the Bureau of Mage Labors today but first they are going to go to the local ward office. They arrrive and the place is a bustling room of bureaucracy. Masami and Yume go to a large counter and ask to meet the chief. He is not available, they are told and as Masami chats with the clerk, an older man beckons Yume to come over. He asks why Masami has come and Yume explains about her arrival. The man wishes her good luck and Yume heads back.
It is then that the young man who had helped Yume the day before arrives. He stalks up to the clerk and places a shopping bag on the counter. He starts to explain why he is there when he spies Yume. He turns, spilling the bag, containing the money she had conjured for him, on to the floor and he angrily tells Yume that he has no need for her or her gift. Yume, who had been in the process of saying thank you to the man, trails off and looks visibly hurt. Masami takes it all in. This is where the episode ends.
Episode 2: Sunset and Steel Frames - Part 2
Still stinging from her run-in with the young man, Yume watches a training video. In the film, she learns that mages are strictly controlled and Powers can only be used when permitted. Creating money or affecting life are among the most serious violations. Yume begins to fret. Afterwards, as she meets up with Masami, she bumps into the kind man from clerk's office and he tells her not to worry - everyone makes mistakes when they are first starting out. Masami agrees and asks Yume if she will ever make money again. She swears never again and Masami tells her that it is sometimes better to learn from experience rather than lecture but also not to become reckless either.
They then move one to another part of the office where Yume formally registers. They get to the last part of the process - choosing a crest - and Yume is horrified to learn that her mother has already selected a Kappa (a Japanese water sprite) for her. She stammers and asks if she may choose a different crest. The clerk says yea and Yume selects a dolphin. She uses her power, as directed by the clerk, to create the image and it is embedded into a ring that Yume will wear. Yume then goes and gets her trainee uniform and she and Masami leave.
They go upstairs to the Chief's office but he is not there. Instead, they encounter Councilor Furusaki and Angela Charon Brooks. Angela is a trainee as well, hailing from England, and Yume is fascinated with meeting the blond hair blue eyed girl. She speaks to Angela in halting English while Angela responds in fluent Japanese. Yume comments that Angela must be very smart to be training in Japan with the Councilor and Furusaki replies that Angela is trouble. The two squabble briefly and Angela leaves. Yume then asks to be excused as she has someplace she wishes to go as well.
The place that Yume is heading for is Shibuya. She wants to find the young man that she helped earlier and apologize properly. But Shibuya is a big. bustling place and she does not have much luck in finding him. After being hassled by endless marketers and falling down, scraping her knee in the process, Yume is ready to give up. It is them that she finally finds him.
She immediately begins to apologize but he stops her and, on hearing her stomach growl, invites her into the beef bowl restaurant where he works. She eats a bowl and asks how much does she owe. The boy tells her that it is his treat and Yume starts to apologize once more. The boy tells her to stop with all the apologizing and Yume begins to cry. She explains that she is a country girl and if she does not pay and start to carry her own, she will be accused of being simple or of using people. The boy pleads with her to stop crying at his place of work and they leave together.
They go to a nearby park and sit in a shelter. Outside, a team of small boys play soccer. Yume introduces herself properly and the boy introduces himself as Zennosuke. Yume tells Zennosuke that she is from Tono and he remarks that they have a good soccer team. As they share their histories, Zennosuke reveals that he had planned on being a professional soccer player until he lost his lower left leg in a motorcycle accident. He explains that since the accident, he has been afraid of crossing the street and when he saw Yume in a similar situation, he felt compelled to help.
Yume asks if there is anything that she could give to Zennosuke in thanks for all of his help and he tries to brush it off. Finally, he gives in and says that he would accept some candy or something like that. Yume closes her eyes and begins her spell. Her mascot, the dolphin, appears and swirls around her. It then dives and gently touches Zennosuke's missing leg.
Suddenly, Zennosuke finds himself on a professional soccer field, with a whole leg, a uniform, and the ball. A voice urges him to score and he races down the field, avoiding defenders and launches a perfect shot into the goal. The fantasy fades away and Zennosuke finds himself on the playground field, surrounded by the young soccer players and they are all amazed as the display of skills they just saw. As they beg Zennosuke to become their coach, he turns and looks at the shelter, only to find Yume gone.
Meanwhile, Yume's power has set off alarms at the Bureau of Mage Labors. Furusaki grumbles that Yume is abusing her powers but one of the center's operators responds that Masami has okayed the used of the power. Furusak retorts that the Bureau is become way too lenient with these offenders.
Yume returns home and finds Masami and Kera preparing to open the club. Kera asks what the super-secret date was about and Yume simply replies that she was visiting the town of Shibuya. She goes upstairs, takes a shower and then steps out onto the rooftop terrance. She watches sunset and thinks back on the events of the day. This is where the episode ends.
Episode 3: The Best News
With the formalities of registration behind her, Yume settles in to begin studying. But the sheer amount of rules and regulations that she must learn within the next month is daunting. Plus, she still has to complete her regular over the summer homework. She sighs and starts digging into the huge task.
Later, she and Masami head out for a stroll. Masami takes a photo of Yume in her uniform so that she can have a picture for her scrap book and then they go for ice cream (in between, Masami slips off for a moment to get a newspaper and the latest lottery numbers). As they enjoy their treat, Masami informs Yume that Angela will be joining them to complete her training, since the Chief has been unavoidably delayed. This causes Yume to drop a small amount of ice cream on her skirt.
Worried that it will leave a stain, she dashes off to the restroom. While Yume is away, Masami overhears a woman asking for instructions to his office. She is an attractive lady in her 20s and, while asking for the directions, spies a pair of shoes she likes. But, before she pays for the shoes, she changes her mind and gives the money to two young girls who are collection for charity. It is a large sum ($85) and the girls are caught off guard. Yume returns and Masami announces that their afternoon appointment has arrived and they need to race home, via a shortcut, to meet her.
At the building, the lady stands in front of the shuttered restaurant, confused. Angela walks up and asks if she is her to meet with Masami. She replies yes and Angela leads her up to office. As they arrive, Yume comes running down the stairs, and apologizing for her tardiness, lets them in. After brief introductions, the lady, Ayano Goto, makes her request. She wishes for Masami to make news of her. Masami attempts to get her to explain further but she is unable to express the thought in a way that Masami can understand. But the two girls believe that they understand what she is asking for and Masami assigns both of them to fulfill Ayano's request together.
The three ladies leave and go to a cafe. There, Ayano reveals that she can from the country, just like Yume, when she was young. She has been working as a waitress/hostess at a club and not too long ago, one of her customers and her fell in love. Unfortunately, the man was arrested and convicted on an embezzlement charge, even though he was not responsible for the crime. He was sent to prison and only family is allowed to write or visit. But she does know that the prisoners are allowed to read the newspaper and that is why she made the request to be "made news." By reading about her in the paper, he would know that she still cares and is waiting for him.
Angela allows a tear to fall and leaps up, beginning to activate her powers. Yume jumps up and stops her. The two girls squabble briefly as Angela contends that Ayano's real wish is to see her man and that is what she is going to grant while Yume counters that they must fulfill the request as made, together. The girls finally agree to grant the wish of being "made news" and they both activate their powers.
The alarms at the Bureau of Mage Labors sound as multiple power usage detections appear on their screens. They quickly identify them as Angela and Yume and Furusaki stands, mouth open in shock. Meanwhile, Ayano finds herself covered in sporting equipment atop of Toyko Municipal Building, with an exhausted Angela and Yume besides her.
Later, the two trainees return to the office. As they walk by the restaurant, Kera announces that Masami knows about their magic-using spree, the Bureau has been calling all afternoon. Yume drops her head in shame and Kera tries to reassure that nothing is wrong but it is little comfort. Upstairs, they report their failure and Masami accepts, explaining that special powers are actually very limited and not all wishes can be granted, especially when they are abstract, like this one.
Later, Masami sits at his desk and looks at his lottery ticket from earlier. He is struck with an idea and announces that he is going out. Yume and Angela remain behind and Yume attempts to be a good host, offering the shower and a change of fresh clothes to Angela. But Angela is still bothered by the fact that her powers did not help Ayano and the two girls decide to go, find her, and try to grant her wish once more.
Meanwhile, Masami has already tracked down Ayano at the bar where she works. There, she is known as Lili and Masami request for her to join him. It is a fancy place with an illuminated full moon on the ceiling and pretty girls in skimpy, revealing short kimonos. Ayano joins him and Masami begins to apologize for the girls failure. But Ayano stops him and says that she appreciates their trying. She was aware that her wish would be difficult to grant and even more so when she agreed to allow two trainees to grant it. But she appreciated their passion and does not blame them. She then shows a lottery ticket that she has hidden in her kimono. It is a partial winner, only a number away from being the full winning card. Discreetly, Masami uses his power to swap Ayano's partial winner for his full winning card. He then goes to leave. Ayano escorts him out and thanks him again for his help. She tells Masami that she hopes that his loneliness will pass soon.
Outside, Yume and Angela try to find the bar but have no luck. They sit on a park bench and are surprised when Masami walks up to them. Angela admits that they came out trying to find Ayano so that they could try granting her wish again and Masami confronts Angela about that. He says that Angela's desire to try again was driven more by her desire to see the wish granted rather than a heartfelt desire to grant the wish - if she wants to become a true mage, she will need to learn that important difference. Angela, angered by the observation, excuses herself and leaves. Yume asks if they should follow her but Masami says that she will be alright.
The next day, Masami reveals his partially winning lottery ticket. Yume is amazed and then she is floored when she discovers, in the paper, that Ayano won the full amount - 300 million Yen ($3 Million US Dollars). Adding to the miracle is the revelation that Ayano is donating the full amount to charity. She explains, in the article, that money and the act of generosity make her think of her imprisoned boyfriend's warmth and that she doesn't need the money, just for her boyfriend to know that she loves him and she will wait for him at the bar - forever if necessary. Yume falls backwards, allowing the paper to cover her like a blanket, and she images a future where Ayano and her boyfriend marry in a happy and beautiful ceremony. She smiles at the warmth of the moment. This is where the episode ends.
Episode 4: A Summer Night and a Mage
On a bright, sunny morning, Yume rises and prepares for another busy day only to learn that Masami has decided that they all will take the day off. Yume smiles at her good fortune, waters the plants - including the miniature cactus and prepares to leave. But before she does, a young girl comes running into the office, calling out for "good ol' Oyamada." Yume explains that he is not in today and asks if she can help. After exchanging names - the girl is called Runa Morikawa, they part company.
Yume wanders around town, exploring and discovering the sights and sounds of Tokyo. In one shop, she bumps into Kera and the two then go to catch a bit to eat together. Yume is surprised to learn that Masami closed the bar as well the office but Kera explains that Masami does this every year. The two talk about how Masami works constantly and barely sleeps or eats. Yume worries that he will fall ill and Kera wonders aloud if that might be his plan. But he quickly tells Yume to forget that notion and gets up to leave. As he does, Yume asks him to direct her to a place that would have a sandbox. Kera is puzzled but Yume explains that she just wants to get a little sand for the house plants. Meanwhile, Masami is aboard a train, with a bouquet of white Lilies in hand.
Yume goes to the school that Kera directed her to. She gathers sand into a small bag and prepares to leave. She is confronted by a teacher who asks what she is doing and she explains her actions. The teacher points out that she is technically stealing but he tells her as long as it is a small amount, it will be okay. As she leaves, she encounters Runa, who is arguing with a boy her name. Yume intervenes and takes the kids for ices.
As they eat the ices, it is revealed the boy, Yasuyuki, is a boy with special powers, in other words, a mage. He had not revealed this ability before but Runa had been talking about requesting a wish - for the rain forecasted for that night to be prevented - and Yasuyuki had argued that the wish would not be granted. This is why Runa had gone to Masami's office in the first place. But during the heat of their arguement, Yasuyuki let it slip, unintentionally, that he had a special power and now Runa is doubly mad with him - first for not telling her that he was mage and second for not using his power to prevent the evening's rain. The reason that she wants the rain stopped is that their teacher, who is leaving the school due to family reasons, had promised to watch the lunar eclipse with them tonight but if it rains, then they will not be able to see the event.
Frustrated and mad, Yasuyuki declares that he wishes that he never had a special power. The reason he had kept it hidden was that if others knew, they would accuse him of using it whenever he achieved something. As he vents his hurt, it triggers memories in Yume of a similar event in her life where she felt the same emotions. But at that time, her best friend, Junko, told her that it is up to her to accept her power and use it properly. It is her duty and responsibility and if anyone gives her any gruff, just send them to Junko. Yume draws on that experience and tries to help Yasuyki.
At the office, Yume and Yasuyuki talk further. Yasuyuki explains that his parents are not mages, only his late grandfather had the power. They talk about the power and feeling it brings further and thunder begins to sound outside. Yasuyuki rises and prepares to leave and Yume makes a decision, stands up and asks him to wait.
Up on the roof of the school, Runa, her teacher and another student wait for the eclipse but things don't look good. The skies are dark and cloudy and it could rain at any moment. Yume and Yasuyuki arrive and all are happy to see them. Yume introduces herself and informs the teacher that she is a mage, just like Yasuyuki. The teacher is surprised to learn about Yasuyuki's power and asks why he hid it and Yasuyuki repeats his statement about not wanting to be judged as a cheater for having a power. They all sit down and await the eclipse.
As they wait, the teacher asks if Yume and Yasuyuki came to use their powers and they reply only if he wants them to. The teacher tells everyone that being able to spend time together is enough of a reward. But then it starts to rain and Runa and the other boy beg Yasuyuki to use his power. He runs off, upset and Yume follows.
In the stairwell, Yasuyuki explains that he cannot control his power well and he does not want to fail. Yume tells him that nobody who tries their best ever fails - even if they do not succeed. She then encourages him to go out and try and that she will help him. Yasuyuki agrees and walks back out onto the roof. He takes up a position at the roof's edge and activates his power.
He remembers all of the special moments that he has shared with his teacher and classmates. He especially focuses on the excitement of this evening and Yume encourages him. As his power grows, Yume activates her gift and adds them to the mix. Soon, a bright blast of light rockets skyward, led by Yume's dolphin, and soon enough, the teacher, Runa, Yume, Yasuyuki and the other boy find themselves floating in space in front of the moon. They land on the moon and have a traditional summer picnic, right there on the surface, complete with yukatas, watermelon, milk for the kids and beer for the teacher. The teacher reflects that he had wished that someday they would be able to share a drink on the moon and Yasuyuki says that is what he imagined in his mind.
Meanwhile, the event has set off alarms all over the place at Bureau of Mage Labors. They are unable to identify the mage but the action - landing on the moon - has become a media and international diplomacy event. Furusaki scrambles on the phone to deny that any mage for Japan was involved. During this, Ginpun, the master chief of the Japanese Bureau of Mage Labors calls and Furusaki frantically tries to explains. Ginpun calmly tells him not to worry - it has all been taken care of.
Back on the roof, Yume and Yasuyuki stand while Runa, the teacher, and the other boy sleep. Yasuyuki worries that Yume will get in trouble and offers to take the blame for her. Yume tells the boy that she will accept responsibility for using her powers and teaches him by her example. Yasuyuki tells her that he still doesn't like his power but he will never forget this night.
Back at the restaurant, Masami has returned from his trip. He pours two martini glasses full with a pale green drink and pushes one across the bar to an invisible partner. He then raises his glass, makes a silent toast, and then sips his drink. Meanwhile, Yume sleeps upstairs with a happy smile on her face. This is where the episode and video ends.
