Episode 1: The Day the Angels Attacked
The story opens with the approach of a huge monster, called an Angel, towards the city of Tokyo 3. All of the armed forces are ready and prepare to attack. Meanwhile, the city and its surrounding suburbs have been evacuated. Misato, a young woman working for the organization called NERV, is racing through town, trying to locate Shinji, the boy she was sent to pick up.
Shinji is waiting patiently at the train station. He tries to call on a pay phone but encounters a recording telling him there are no lines available. He sighs deeply and tries to think about what to do next. He catches a glimpse of a strange girl out of the corner of his eye but when he looks back, she is gone. It is then that he hears a massive explosion.
Coming out from behind a hill, a fleet of low flying attack crafts back out. They are followed by the huge Angel. The Angel smashes one of the craft and Shinji cowers as debris begins to fall around him. Suddenly, a car screeches to halt before him. The door swings open and Misato asks, somewhat tongue in cheek, if she is late. Shinji hops in and they scramble to get out of the way of the approaching Angel.
As they tear away, the military launches everything they have at the monster. Nothing has any effect. Finally, with all other methods exhausted, they decide to use a "N2 Mine", an extremely powerful explosive. Misato realizes their plan and she and Shinji duck. Even a distance of many miles, the shock wave is still strong enough to turn their car over several times.
Down in the command center of NERV, the military commanders celebrate their victory. They gloat and tell Gendo Ikari that his services won't be need after all. He tells them to wait and see. Slowly, the sensors return to functioning. The monster has not been destroyed and stands regenerating in the middle of the huge crater.
By this time, Misato and Shinji have arrived at the entrance to NERV. They drive their car onto a shuttle train and begin their descent. Along the way, Misato hands Shinji a manual and he begins to read. The train then bursts out into a huge underground cavern, filled with buildings, trees and such. "A geofront", cries Shinji.
A little later, Shinji and Misato get lost trying to navigate the maze of tunnels and hallways that make up NERV. They end up having to call for Ritsuko, the brilliant scientist of NERV to find them and lead them to their destination. She takes them to a darkened room.
When she snaps the lights on, Shinji finds himself before the giant face of a robot. Ritsuko introduces it as the synthetic life form known as "Evangelion" and tells them that it is man's last and best chances at defeating the Angels.
Up above the huge hall, Gendo appears on a platform. He informs Shinji that he has been called here so that he may pilot the Evangelion. Shinji is overwhelmed and protests that he can't do it. Gendo expresses his disappointment in his son by telling his assistant that "the replacement is useless" and orders that Rei, the first pilot, be prepared to go into battle.
The doors slide open and a hospital gurney comes rolling in. Lying on it is Rei, wrapped in bandages. It is then that the Angel above strikes a close blow. It causes light fixtures to break loose of their brackets and come crashing down on Shinji and Rei. Shinji instinctively raises his arm over his head to shield himself. Remarkably, the Evangelion copies his move, though the unit has not been activated and was still secured in restraints. Everyone looks on in amazement and Misato asks under her breath if he is "the one". Gendo just smiles a sly, knowing smile.
Shinji is placed into an entry plug and interested into the Evangelion. The team powers it up and then moves it to the launch pad. The Evangelion is then launched to the surface where it comes face to face with the Angel. This is where episode one ends.
Episode 2: Unfamiliar Ceiling
Episode 2 opens where episode left off; with Shinji inside of the Eva facing the Angel. Ritsuko encourages him to take a step. He does and everyone rejoices that the unit is walking. But their celebration is cut short as the Eva stumbles and falls on its face.
The Angel sees the opening and attacks. It snaps the left arm in two and cracks the armor surrounding the head. Shinji then loses consciousness. He awakens to find himself lying in a hospital bed, staring at a strange ceiling.
Meanwhile, Gendo is defending his actions before a shadowy counsel. They chastise him for spending too much and using his own son. They advise him to focus on an even more secret and mysterious project called "The Human Instrumentality Project." They then vanish and Gendo comments, "Yes, humanity has no time left".
Outside, Ritsuko and Misato are at the site of the battle. They are overseeing the removal of parts of the Eva and the reconstruction of damaged buildings and equipment. On their way back, they receive the news that Shinji has awoken and Misato rushes back to check on him.
Shinji seems find and they start the process of getting him settled in his new home. Shinji learns that he has been assigned a unit in which he will be living alone. Misato express her concerns but Shinji says it is okay; he is use to living alone. Misato then decides that it is her job to protect Shinji and makes the decision that Shinji will live with her. They gather their stuff and head for home.
While this is going on, Gendo and Ritsuko meet the observation room of Unit 0, the first Evangelion (Shinji's Eva is called Unit 1). Gendo informs her that Rei will be ready to fight again in 20 days and her unit should be ready by then also.
On their way home, Misato stops along the roadside to show Shinji a special event. As the sun sets, sirens wail and huge buildings rise from bunkers beneath the city. Shinji marvels at the site while Misato quietly tells him that he is seeing the true form of Tokyo 3, the city that he saved. They then hop back in the car and head on their way.
They stop at a grocery store to buy stuff for a "welcome home" party that Misato wants to throw in honor of her new roommate. They get what they need and hi the road one last time. Once home, she invites in him into his new house. The place is a mess, filled with junk food and beer. They have a dinner of instant meals and then Misato tells Shinji to hit the bath.
But before he can even get into the bath, he encounters a strange penguin using the bathroom. He yelps in surprise and Misato informs him that he is their third roommate, Pen-Pen. Shinji then heads to the bath, no longer shocked by anything.
Later, as he lays on the bed in his new room, he remembers the harrowing fight with the Angel. After the Angel had knocked him out, the team tried desperately to get him out of the Eva, but all connection had been lost. Everyone watched in horror as the Angel continued to smash the defenseless Evangelion. But then something snapped in Shinji's mind and the Eva sprung into action.
A terrific sequence of actions occurs which eventually leads to the Evangelion defeating the Angel. The Angel, realizing its defeat, then self destructs. Everyone in the control room waits with baited breath for the smoke and fire to clear. And out of it walks the Evangelion.
The episode ends with Misato entering the darkened bedroom of Shinji and telling him he did a great job. Shinji , though, does not acknowledge her. This is where the episode ends.
