Episode 1: Metamorforce!
The story opens with the sound of Hiroshi Ozora's voice as he plows through difficult calculations and concepts. This soon gives way to dreams of super hero powers and the adoration of thousands for his noble deeds.
Night gives way to morning and young Nozomu, Mirai and Hiroshi's younger brother, is putting a late breakfast on the table. Mirai is up, preening herself in the mirror while she stuffs her face and Hiroshi is asleep at his keyboard. Nozomu chides Mirai for her manners and hands her a credit card bill. Mirai snatches the bill away from her younger brother and makes him promise not to tell Hiroshi about it. She also swears him to secrecy about her participation in a beauty contest. Mirai then heads up to Hiroshi's room to wake him up.
Mirai knocks and enters the disorderly room. Notes, food wrappers and pieces of computer are scatter thickly across the floor. Mirai carefully tip-toes her way towards her sleeping brother, nose wrinkled in disgust. She wakes her brother and then a passage on a notebook catches her eye. But as she begins to read it, Hiroshi grabs it and glares at her. Mirai turns and leaves, headed for the contest.
At the big convention hall in the heart of this future Tokyo (this OAV is set in the year 2045) the citizens have gathered to view "antique" F1 race cars before the big race the next day. Hiroshi is there as an admirer and collector of "retro" objects and he is fascinated by the cars. He runs into his old teacher, Professor Amagi and scrambles to pull something out of his pocket. We are lead to believe that Hiroshi is about to show his invention, the moldiver suit, but instead Hiroshi pulls a bit of "antique" technology. The Professor laughs and has his assistant, Isabelle, reveal a "mint VHD player with software". Hiroshi tries to get closer for a better look but it is then that the big event begins.
An announcer comes onstage and welcomes the visitors. He then reveals the special "guest" of the night, a rare 6 wheeled F1 car (based on the actual Tyrrell 034 that raced on the F1 circuit in 1976-1977). He annouces the beginning of the "Miss Speed Queen" beauty contest and introduces the judges with one of them being Professor Amagi.
Backstage, Mirai sits with the other contestants waiting for her turn on the runway. Her best friend, Mao, is the in pageant as well and teases Mirai while they wait. Finally, it is Mirai's turn onstage and she makes her grand appearance, which causes Hiroshi, out in the audience, to spit up his drink in surprise.
But the contest is rudely interrupted by the appearance of a group of large, brightly colored mechas. They fire fireworks in the air and one projects "Machinegal on top" on the night sky with a laser. The mecha then terrorize the audience with a green gooey substance and proceed to attempt to steal the F1 racer.
The girls flee in fear but Mao is stuck and Mirai stays to try to free her. Hiroshi watches the events unfold and decided this is the right time to reveal his creation. He starts to undress and makes it down to his boxers before he realizes that he is out in public. He scoops up his clothes and dives underneath a tablecloth to finish his transformation.
What appears is an idealized, stereotypical male super hero, complete with cape. This hero begins to battle with the mecha but it soon apparent that he could have used a little practice before the first big fight. But, despite his mistakes, Hiroshi and his suit carry the day. As he leaves, Mao sighs with her eyes filled with dreamy love while Mirai, who suspects that the hero might be her brother, sighs "Oh brother". On her way out of the wrecked stadium, Mirai spies Hiroshi's forgotten clothes and scoops them up.
In the aftermath of the battle, Dr. Machinegal, the evil genius behind the attempted robbery, returns to his lair, which is populates by beautiful young robot women. He rants over the loss of the F1 and orders the girls to recover it. One girl, Brooke, steps up and asks for the assignment. Machinegal grants it to her and adds one extra order, humiliate the hero that ruined their plans by unmasking him before the world during the Tokyo Grand Prix!
Later that night, Mirai returns home. She asks if Hiroshi is home and Nozomu says that he does not think he is back yet. But, just then, they hear a sneeze from Hiroshi's room and Mirai goes to confront her brother. She pops in without knocking and catches a nearly naked Hiroshi working at his computer. Hiroshi yells at her and she quickly closes the door. Through the door, she reminds Hiroshi that they had all agreed to keep no secrets from each other while their parents are away and then she opens the door to return to Hiroshi's "one and only suit, glasses and underwear." As she does, she spies the designs for the super hero on Hiroshi's screen and she leaves the room, proud of her detective work.
A little bit later, Mirai is sitting in a lecture at school. She is pining for her dream guy, Mr. Misaki and asks aloud for him to wait for her. Suddenly a teacher's voice booms out, chiding Mirai for not paying attention. But it is actually Mao, teasing Mirai once again. She runs up to Mirai and shows her the newspapers she is carrying. They are filled with stories and photos of the new super hero "Captain Tokyo", which Mirai knows is just her brother. Mao is smitten which the hunky guy and Mirai gets the "bright" idea that she could make "Captain Tokyo" even more attractive, given the chance. Mirai also learns that she won the "Speed Queen" competition and Mao came in second place.
Back at the house, Mirai sneaks into Hiroshi's room and starts up his computer. After quickly glancing at his notes, Mirai feels ready to make her additions to the suit. She slips the "brainwave interface" on her head and hits "enter" but the screen suddenly fills with error messages.
The next day brings the long awaited race. The cars zoom around the course but Nozomu does not see the thrill of it. Hiroshi tells him that it is a "man's sport" and real men savor the sound of the engine and power of the speed. Mirai is down in the pits, dressed in a very tight one piece suit along with Mao. Up in the announcer's booth. Professor Amagi assists with commentary.
Mirai signals to the driver of the 6-wheeled F1 car to come into the pit and he does. As the other mechanics race to fill the fuel tanks and change the tires, one guy works on the back of the car and Mirai wipes the visor of the driver. Mirai keeps a careful eye on the guy at the back of car because something just does not seem right. The car speeds off but there is an explosion almost instantly after he leaves the pits.
The tops of the lightstands blow off and a banner arises into the area. "Machinegal on top" it reads. At the same time, the driver of the F1 car reports that he can no longer control the car and fans watch in horror as the car forces one racer after another into wrecks. Mirai realizes that guy she was suspicious of before must have something to do with the problem and she tries to him.
At the same time, Hiroshi slips away to transform into "Captain Tokyo". Just as the annoucer cries out "where is Captain Tokyo", Hiroshi appears at the top of the grandstands. He shouts out in his fine, super hero basso voice "I am here" but the crowd reacts with puzzled looks. Hiroshi does not understand their looks until he catches a glimpse of himself in one of the giant TV screens. Instead of being a tall manly super hero, he has the body of a cute, sexy "sailor gal", complete with long, flowing hair, big purple bow, short skirt and thigh high stockings! Mortified, he allows himslef to knocked to the ground by the suspicious "guy", who turns out to be Brooke, one of Dr. Machinegal's girls.
Hiroshi quickly grabs Mirai and takes her to darkened stairwell under the grandstands. There he turns the "mol-unit" over to Mirai. It seems that along with her exterior alterations, she also caused the unit to be suited to her physical abilities as well and Hiroshi can no longer control the suit. Mirai strips down and transforms using the "mol-unit". But she becomes the super stud! Unfazed, Mirai zooms off to finish the rescue, leaving poor Hiroshi with the skimpy one piece as he only available clothing.
Out on the track, Mirai intorduces herself as "Moldiver" to the audience and proceeds to battle with Brooke. Hiroshi coaches her via a headset and they do well at first. But the Machinegals use their matter transporter to send Brooke a powerful battle suit and soon the two, Brooke and Moldiver, engage in blindingly fast race.
At first, it is simply a contest to see who will get to the car first but it soon goes out of control as Mirai realizes that she does not have completely mastery over the suit yet. She easily defeats the enhanced Brooke with sheer speed by pulling the hapless girl behind her until her suit begins to disintegrate from the terrific speed.
Unfortunately, Murai loses her headset in the process as well and csn no longer receive instructions from Hiroshi. She desperately tries to stop the speeding suit and only succeeds in ending up naked at supersonic speed! But she quickly regains the suit (this time in the proper "sailor girl form) and tumbles to a stop, tearing up miles of the race track. She also manages to remove Machinegal's device from the F1 car. The episode closes with Hiroshi appearing at top of the stands, dressed in Murai's swimsuit, shoulders slumped in a "why me" expression.
Episode 2: Overzone
Episode 2 opens with Hiroshi and Nozomu lounging on the beach in Florida. There are plenty of scantily-clad women (and accompanying "fan service" shots) around and Hiroshi tries not to be embarrassed. Into this scene walks the impressively built Mr. Misaki. He and Hiroshi are old school chums and they greet each other. Mr. Misaki asks why the two men are in Florida and Nozomu replies that they came for the International Idol Concert being held at Cape Kennedy. Mr. Misaki asks why Murai is not with them and Hiroshoi answers that she felt the cost of the airfare was too much.
Back in Japan, Murai is heading home after a long day's work but she is unhappy at the small amount of money she earned. Despite that, a dress in a shop window catches her eye and she squeals with delight. "It would be the perfect dress for me to be wearing with Mr. Misaki.", she thinks aloud. She counts her money and decides to spend what she has and put the balance on charge.
Meanwhile, back in Florida, Professor Amagi is in Cape Kennedy as well. He is the head of the space program and is not happy that the space center is being used as a concert venue. He worries that his beloved (and collectible) space shuttle will be damaged and he hatches a plan. Donning his Dr. Machinegal persona, he commands Jennifer (one of his machinegals) to snatch the real shuttle and replace it with a fake one that will be used to ruin the concert.
The day of the concert arrives and Nozomu waits impatiently as Hiroshi goes to the bathroom. Poor Hiroshi manages to get himself lost and stumbles across the real space shuttle. He then heads back to Nozomu. When he gets there. he finds both Mr. Misaki and Professor Amagi. Hiroshi approaches Amagi and they talk about the shuttle the way some men talk about a favorite classic car. Hiroshi lets it slip that the shuttle on display is a fake and that the real one is hidden and Amagi glups. But Amagi is even more flustered when he sees Mr. Misaki. He wonders to himself where he has seen Mr. Misaki recently because his figure seems so familiar. It then hits the professor like a ton of bricks, Mr. Misaki has the same build as Moldiver! The professor hastily excuses himself and uses his matter transporter (as always, a toilet stall) to return to his secret lair. There he plots to kill three birds with one stone: steal the shuttle, ruin the concert and rid himself of Moldiver.
While Dr. Machinegal plots, Mr. Misaki, Hiroshi and Nozomu wait in a very long line for the concert. Just then Mao appears and she can't believe her luck to find Mr. Misaki alone (somewhat) in the same place as her. She starts to head over but she spies a bank of public phones and cannot resist the opportunity.
Mao calls Murai, who is busy trying on her new outfit. Murai answers and is not happy when she sees Mao on the videoscreen. But after a little teasing, Mao gets to real purpose of her call and tells (and shows) Murai that she is there in Florida with a very single Mr. Misaki while Murai is stuck in Japan. Mao signs off and Murai shatters the videoscreen in anger and frustration.
At the concert. Mr. Misaki, Nozomu and Hiroshi take their seats as the performance begins. But Amy Lean, the idol signer, barely starts her song before Dr. Machinegal interrupts. Amy, who is performing on a platform high atop the shuttle, which is setup ready to launch, finds herself caught and strapped to the shuttle by robot arms and Jennifer the machinegal appears on the stage. She demands that Mr. Misaki transform into Moldiver or Amy Lean will die. With those words, she launches the shuttle and Amy is sent soaring into space.
Hiroshi knows that he must do something so he slips out and finds an empty tunnel to transform. He removes his clothes, takes out the molunit and cries out "metamorforce" as he presses the activation button. But instead of becoming "Captain Tokyo" he hears idol music. "Murai!!", he mutters.
Meanwhile, Murai is also getting ready to transform, though she is unaware for the events happening at Cape Kennedy. She takes the unit from its hiding place in her underwear drawer and cries out "metamorforce" as well. Unfortunately, she forgets that you need to be naked when you transform and so her beautiful new outfit is destroyed in the process. Once transformed (appearing as Captain Tokyo this time) she heads for Cape Kennedy.
At the Cape, the crowd has found Mr. Misaki and are pleading with him to transform and save Amy. Mr. Misaki continues to proclaim his innocence in the matter and it is then that Murai (as Captain Tokyo) arrives. Hiroshi quickly makes radio contact with her and directs her to save Amy. Murai lifts off and zooms after the shuttle. Jennifer, after receiving a wing assembly, pursues.
As she races towards the craft, Murai forces the molunit to switch to her "magical girl/sailor girl" mode. She catches up to Amy and the shuttle, frees her and places her inside the ship to keep her save. Then Jennifer arrives. They fight a fierce battle, crashing into the shuttle time after time. Back on the ground, Dr. Machinegal and his henchwomen are amazed at the abilities of moldiver and taking reading for future battles. Soon enough, Jennifer is defeated and Dr. Machinegal is forced to go to plan B.
From the cargo hold of the shuttle, a huge laser satellite emerges and fires a powerful blast at Murai. But she is unharmed and goes on to destroy the weapon. The resulting explosion causes the shuttle to tumble back towards Earth and Murai races to save Amy once more. She snatches the idol singer from the falling craft and whisks her away to safety. Unfortunately, the damaged fake shuttle ends up crashing down on the hangar where Dr. Machinegal had hidden the real shuttle, destroying them both.
The episode ends with Murai flying off as Moldiver and returning a moment later as herself to thwart Mao's plans. The final image is of a naked Hiroshoi standing in the empty stadium hallway pleading from someone to bring him is clothes.
Episode 3: Longing
The third installment of Moldiver is a comedy of timing. Mr. Misaki has come to Tokyo but he has only the one day to spend there before he has to head to Kyoto. He contact Hiroshi and asks him to meet.
The episode opens with Professor Amagi and a TV reporter observing the work of a repair robot has it rebuilds the highway destroyed by Moldiver and the Machinegals in the first episode. The professor gets irritated when the reporter announces that Dr. Machinegal was responsible for the damage and Amagi retorts that Moldiver is the guilty party. The professor then retires to his private bathroom, where he transports himself to his secret headquarters.
In his lair, Amagi/Machinegal hears a report on the abilities of Moldiver and decides that he will allow another attempt to capture or defeat Moldiver. But he instructs his dolls to "fight conservatively" because he is responsible, as Professor Amagi, for all repairs.
Back at the Ozora household, Hiroshi has left to meet Mr. Misaki. But a call comes in and it is Mr. Misaki. It seems that the snarled traffic from the construction has forced him to change plans. But Hiroshi can not be reached so Murai agrees to meet Mr. Misaki. They decide to meet at the Hachiko statue (Hachiko was a dog that saw his owner off to work and greeted him when he returned at a train station in Japan every day and continued to do so for 11 years after his owner died. The statue to the faithful beast is a popular meeting landmark in Japan.). Unfortunately, there are two Hachikos in this modern Tokyo and, of course, they each go to wrong one.
While Murai is at the wrong Hachiko, Mr. Murai meets Mao, who is dress as a Hachiko, while waiting. They talk briefly and Mao gives Mr. Misaki a small hachiko keychain. Mr. Misaki leaves a message with Mao and heads off. A few minutes later, Murai arrives and after a little teasing, Mao tells Murai that Mr. Misaki wants her to meet him at a coffee shop. Murai dashes off to catch up to him.
Meanwhile, the Machinegals have started their plan to draw out Moldiver. They begin by disguising themselves as policewomen and start causing traffic accidents throughout the city. Unfortunately, the accidents have ripple effects and not before long, there are broken water mains and power outages throughout the city.
it is a water problem that prevents Murai from making to coffee shop in time, despite her transforming into Moldiver, and she calls home to learn from Nozomu that Mr. Misaki is on his way over there. She makes Nozomu promise to keep Mr. Misaki there and then she dashes off.
This time, a power outage traps Murai on an aerial tram and she is forced to transform in the crowd to escape. Meanwhile, Mr. Misaki arrives at the house but fails to get Nozomu's attention. He leaves a note and heads on. Murai arrives moments later and races off to meet Mr. Misaki at their old high school.
At the school, Mr. Misaki waits in the music room for Murai. As he waits, Mao enters, dressed as a catwoman for a drama club play. Mr. Misaki leaves a message with her once again and heads on to his next appointment. This time, though, Murai and Mr. Misaki almost meet as they pass by each other on two escalators. But bad timing causes them to be looking away at the crucial moment.
During all this, the Machinegals have been chasing the signals of Moldiver all over town. Their reign of destruction has also been ongoing and Professor Amagi grows more and more frustrated at the situation.
Murai finally arrives at the school and learns from a frog-clad Mao that Mr. Misaki had to leave so that he could catch the evening shuttle to Kyoto. Murai thanks her and dashes off to get to the airport before Mr. Misaki is gone. She ducks into a fast food restaurant to transform but unfortunately forgets that she transforms into a man sometimes and when she emerges from the stall as Captain Tokyo the women attack her. This delays her just enough that the Machinegals finally catch up to her and Murai finds herself further detained by the ensuing battle.
The Machinegals chase Moldiver all over town, wreaking destruction as they go. Professor Amagi weeps at the site. Eventually. Murai's frustration takes over and she defeats the Machinegals and races off to catch Mr. Misaki. But two critical things have occurred as a result of the battle. The first is that the small bag that Murai was carrying her clothes in has been lost and the second is that the Mol-unit has used up all of its energy.
So, just as she is nearing the airport, Murai finds herself falling down into a a large hall naked as a jaybird. She quickly scampers undercover and frets over what to do. But she hears bells and peeks out to see a procession being lead by a woman in a white gown.
Up at the airport, Mr. Misaki's flight is announced and with a heavy sigh, he heads for the plane. He is the last to board and as he steps into the plane, he hears is name being called. He turns to see Murai running breathlessly towards in full weeding regalia. She finally reaches Mr. Misaki and stands before him "in the works" (long white gown, gloves, veil, etc.). He tells her he is very glad that they finally got to meet and hands her a disk. On it is Misaki's theories about Moldiver. Murai is crestfallen that this is what Misaki was worried about but perks up when Misaki gives her the small Hachiko dog keychain as a gift. The episode closes with Hiroshi half-asleep on a park bench, unaware of all the goings on.
Episode 4: Destruction
The fourth episode opens with a pseudo-documentary of the final battle of the Japanese battleship Yamato. Onboard, Professor Amagi's grandfather races to try to finish and employ a device called "the enemy resistant armor". That device relies upon a another element called the "moltron".
100 years later, in the present time of Moldiver", a recovery effort is underway to raise the Yamato from the bottom of the ocean. Down on the ship, the machinegals put the final touches on the ship while up on the surface, a circle of eager onlookers wait. Hiroshi and Murai also are watching, though from the comfort of their home.
Meanwhile, Nozomu has broken into the recovery facility. As guards scramble to find the intruder, Nozomu slips into the Professor's private bathroom aboard his helicopter and waits. Soon enough, the Professor boards and heads for the surfacing Yamato. He goes to the rest room and is surprised to see Nozomu waiting there. A stumble causes the professor to activate his material transport system and both Nozomu and Amagi are teleported to the deck of the Yamato.
On board the Yamato, Nozomu starts pulling levers to see what they do and manages to open a trapdoor. Both he and the professor fall down and end up inside the room with the "enemy resistant armor". Nozomu, curious, takes advantage of the professor being stunned by the fall and investigates the system.
When the professor awakes, he finds Nozomu busily repairing the device. He asks if Nozomu has found any "light bulb looking parts" and Nozomu plays it coy. It is then that the professor is signaled by one of his machinegals and she calls him "Professor Machinegal" within earshot of Nozomu. Amagi/Machinegal then leaves hastily for the bridge of the ship because it is about to break the surface. His last words to Nozomu are to go up on the deck and jump overboard once the ship surfaces.
With the ship now surfaced, Machinegal and his henchwomen reveal themselves and claim the Yamato as their own. To reinforce their point, they fire a volley of cannon fire into the water near one of the observer ships. Back at the house, Murai realizes that Moldiver is required and transforms. She races off to the site before Hiroshi even realizes she is gone.
Meanwhile, Nozomu, who has had the "moltron" bulbs all along, finishes is the enemy resistant armor and activates it. A blinding blue flash emerges and the entire ship is surrounded by a sphere of glowing blue. Then slowly, the ship and the half a sphere of water beneath it begin to rise up into the air.
Moldiver arrives and the dolls, in special attack suits, confront Murai. Machinegal orders his dolls not to damage the ship but, of course, destruction ensues. Amagi/Machinegal quickly realizes that the enemy resistant armor has been activated but also recognizes that fatal flaw that his grandfather had not anticipated. Not only is the ship shielded from attack but it is even protected from the Earth's gravity and therefore is floating away on it's own.
Therefore, Amagi orders one of the attacking units to leave Moldiver and report to the enemy resistant armor room. The device is too strong from Amagi to approach but the powersuit allows the machinegal to inch her way towards it. She barely makes it and manages to free on the of "moltron" units. But the action cause a chain reaction that destroys the ships.
Moldiver and Nozomu escape, as do the Professor and the machinegals. Nozomu ends up with the Professor and the machine gals and makes his exit after being sure that the Professor is safe.
While all of this has been going on, Hiroshi has been busy decoding and deciphering the information at Mr. Misaki had given to Murai in the last episode. Murai, back from the ship, joins him in his lab and is dismayed to learn that Mr. Misaki and Hiroshi have come to the same conclusion, if the pilot of the dimensional crossing spaceship is not protected by a suit like the Moldiver, he or she has a slim to none chance of survival. Murai urges Hiroshi to give Mr. Misaki the molunit by Hiroshi explains that the unit is nearly depleted and only has enough element left to be able to transform one or two times more.
The episode ends with Nozomu, who is happy that he did not tell Professor Amagi what he had originally planned (having learned that Professor Amagi is Dr. Machinegal), finishes his own mysterious device. He holds up a mol-crystal in his hand and proclaims that he is now the "top technologist".
