Review:

The Gundam series is one of the oldest and most revered franchises in all of Anime. Known for its complex stories, highly developed characters, and exacting detail, it is a fully fleshed out universe with a cult following.

But in the mid-90's, the franchise found itself in a precarious position arising from competition and an aging storyline that was not attracting new, younger viewers. The solution was to create a new story within the Gundam universe and populate it with young heroes to which the younger target audience would relate. The result was Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and it was, and remains, a smash hit.

The five young men who form the core of this yarn are at once complex and appealing. Each has reason to fight but why is revealed tantalizingly slowly through out the engaging story. The other characters: Relena Peacecraft, the heroine of Gundam Wing; her brother, and the charismatic Trieze Khushrenada all add to the broth.

The animation is fluid and the fight scenes are well paced. The music is just perfect, adding to the atmosphere and giving it an "epic" feel. Even the American dubbed voices seem ideally matched to their characters. The only thing that keeps this from being a perfect series is the tendency towards too much explanation of plot elements and motivations. This is a fantastic series that will have fans and newcomers alike glued to their seats and hungrily awaiting the next episode.

Volume 1: "DVD Operation 1" Plot Summary:

Many years in the future, Man has populated space with Colonies, huge space station that orbit the Earth. But on Earth, the government treats the Colonies unjustly and with contempt. The Colonies, unwilling to suffer further, devise a plan in which they will send five specially trained operatives in huge armored suits, called Gundams, to Earth to force the goverment to give the Colonies the peace and freedom they demand.

The plan, called Operation Metor, sends five young men in their Gundams to attack strategic installations on Earth but end up stirring up a hornet's nest of trouble as they draw the ire of OZ, the military force, and the Romefeller Foundation, the secretive organization that controls OZ.

Not before long, a war to determine the fate of the Earth, the Colonies and their futures erupts, with the Gundams squarely in the middle!
