Review:

Based on a popular Playstation game, Meltylancer: The Animation is fun mix of unique characters, action, comedy, and mystery. The story starts "midstream" with the Meltylancer team scattered across the universe but viewers unfamiliar with the game and it's backstory are quickly brought up to speed over the three episodes in the first DVD volume. The characters are distinct enough that they can be easily recognized and indentified and the story builds rapidly.

The animation, by GONZO, is crisp and clean. Though it does not have that "shiny 3D" look that many of GONZO's other efforts, such as Vandread or Blue Submarine No. 6, has, the camera and effects work is state of the art.

All in all, this is a fun, action-packed anime with just enough comedy and mystery to make everyone happy.

Volume 1: "Alpha" Plot Summary:

In the first episode, the Melty Lancer team, which had been disbanded a year previously, is reassembled. A new aide is sent to quickly round the women who are the heart and soul of this elite fighting team and bring them back to Earth. Meanwhile, Earth is threatened by a rapidly approaching asteroid. Will the team be reunited and ready to handle this crisis in time?

The second episode finds the Melty Lancer team adjusting to their new lives and solving a string of robberies. Melfina attempts to discover why Melty Lancer has been reunited while the rest of team confronts the crooks at a DNA storage vault. Together, they have to save the DNA and fight off a huge gelatinous monster. And who are the two mysterious animal beings that are lurking in the background?

The third episode finds the team invited to a big social event. Commander Collins selects Sylvia and Sakuya to attend and leaves the others behind. At the shindig, Vanessa and the other criminals appear and things quickly become desperate for the Meltylancers.

Meanwhile, more mysteries appear. Melvina encounters a secret informer who sheds light on why Meltylancer was reassembled while Nana briefly and suddenly transforms into a very sexy, adult woman. What could all of this mean?
