Episode 1: The Forthcoming Time
It's a rainy morning and in a suburban Tokyo home, Kouji Aiba is finishing his packing. As he does so, he chats with his mom, promising to call and asking her to make sure that his messy brother Yuki does not go into to his room. He prepares to leave, having to first bear with his mother fussing over the tie he is wearing, and then he heads out into the rain.
A little later, at the local subway station, Kouji boards the train for the Tokyo airport. But first he plays a little game, waiting until the last possible moment to jump up from his seat and board before the doors close. He enters the train safely but is then shoved in the back by a girl leaping onboard just behind him. It is his friend, Aoi Housen. She had been searching the train for him but had not been able to find him, thanks to both his little stunt and the fact that he changed out of his uniform and into a jogging suit. Ao reprimands him for the slack clothing but he declares that he will wear whatever is comfortable to him.
The reason for the trip is the training and licensing of future astronauts. Kouji finds himself teamed with a young man from Jupiter called Ikumi Oze and togther they try to pass the test for a Level 2 license by operating a remote-controlled pod to retrieve space debris. But things don't go well. They are interrupted by two other teams and then one team loses their pod and the test is cancelled. Kouji and Ikumi return to the space platform, Liebe Delta, and go through the unsettling process of activating gravity.
Later, in the locker room, Kouji observes the pod 3 team, of one of the teams that interfered with his test, arguing. Kouji goes and taps the leader on his shoulder and recommends that if he does not get along with his teammate (Kouji's own brother Yuki), he should apply for a change. Ikumi asks Kouji if he knows the pod 3 guys and Kouji feigns innocence.
That night, Kouji and Ikumi eat dinner together. At their table, they are served by Aoi and another student, both girls being in the stewardess training program. Aoi makes Kouji eat extra-large portions, claiming that he is undernourished and orders him to eat it all, since her grade depends on it. Kouji sighs and accepts the meal. Together the two boys watch as the upper level trainees prepare for a big mission called a dive, that will take Liebe Delta down into the turbulent space, called Geduld, beneath it. The other stewardess trainee, Kozue Izumi, who is smitten with Ikumi, asks if he will be going back to Jupiter for the dive holiday but he replies that he will not be leaving the station. Kouji also announces that he will remain at the school.
The next morning, Liebe Delta is abuzz with activity in preparation for the dive. Announcements sound throughout the ship, reminding everyone that they will be out of contact to Earth after 12pm and they should make any calls before then. Kouji is unhappy with all the noise and retreats to his room. Even there he is unable to find peace, since there is an email from his mom awaiting him. He ignores in and flops down on the bed.
Then the door buzzer sounds and Aoi enters. She snaps on the light and begins to clean the room. Irritated, Kouji asks why she didn't go back to Earth and she replies that his mother is counting on her to take care of him. She then asks Kouji to go someplace fun with her and they leave.
Aoi and Kouji go to an observation area to watch the descent. But even though the moment could be quite romantic, Kouji ruins it by saying that the images must be simulated, due to the fact that cameras can not work within the Geduld. Suddenly, an arm reaches out and snags Aoi away.
It's Ikumi and Kozue and they have found something even more interesting to watch. Kouji and Aoi join them as they spy on Yuki as he fights with his girlfriend. The two break up and head their separate ways and Aoi leaps out from the shadows to challenge the girl and defend Yuki as a nice guy. "What's so nice about him?" asks Kouji.
Meanwhile, there is trouble brewing. Someone has sabotaged the Liebe Delta and the student crew has just discovered it. They are losing control and the ship is falling into a massive gravity well that threatens to crush it. They sound the alarm and safety doors begin to slam close.
Unfortunately, a girl gets trapped in one of the sealed sectors and Ikumi and Kouji quickly go to the rescue. They don spacesuits and make their way towards the trapped girl. They reached the door but are stopped but the suddenly arrival of Yuki. He demands that they abandoned the rescue on the grounds that the girl is already doomed and that opening the hatch would doom everyone else as well. The boys argue and get nowhere.
While this is happening, a strange girl appears on the Liebe Delta. She wears an odd costume that springs open once she onboard and she seems to be following the debate between the brothers, throwing out comments in response to their accusations. It is here that the episode ends.
Episode 2: Unnecessary Things
2137 AD. That is the date when everything changed for humanity. Up until then, humans had advanced far into space and colonized Mars, Jupiter and beyond. But on that fateful date, a massive solar flare erupted from the Sun and created the Geduld, the mysterious high energy and high gravity fog that filled the Solar System. As a result, space travel became difficult and dangerous again.
In the present, 2275 AD, though, the Liebe Delta is in danger. An act of sabotage has incapacitated the adult supervising crew and the trainees are left with a crippled ship that has just 14 hours before it is crushed by the intense gravity of the Geduld.
On board, Juli, the top female trainee pilot, is busy trying to save the ship while Kouji and Ikumi are below, in spacesuits, trying to save trapped shipmates. But before they can open a closed hatch, Yuki, Kouji's estranged brother, appears and warms them not to do something so rash. He even goes as far as to question why Kouji would start to finally care about another life. And down in the master control room, where the adults lie motionless, the strange girl in the pink and purple clothes, hovers over the scene.
Meanwhile, the remainder of students (all children) are unaware of the grave circumstances. They continue with their everyday activities, playing video games, dating, and so on. But the situation get s even worst as the few remaining adults, who are attempting to enter the locked control room, learn that the head master has been killed.
Up in the trainee control room, Juli discovers that the Liebe may have just enough power to escape the Geduld and she encourages her crew mates to make it so. But she is dealt another blow, when the life support system goes critical. This spawn alarms and signals throughout the ship and finally, all of the students begin to learn just how dire their situation is.
With the sounding of the alerts, Juli decides that it is time to announce the situation and give orders to all on board. The trainees manage to connect into the ship's PA system and Juli calmly announces the situation and requests that all personal move to the central core of the ship.
Down in the lower levels, Kouji and Ikumi are unable to hear the alerts but the signals and the closing hatches are enough to tell them that they have to escape - quick. They race through the maze of passages and nearly become trapped by a closing hatch but Ikumi pushes Kouji from behind and gets both of them through before the door seals shut.
The situation is getting grimmer by the minute. The few remaining adults finally make it to the trainee control room and realize that in order to make it possible for the ship to fly to safety, they will have to sacrifice themselves and go below to make critical, time-saving adjustments. They also help evacuate the children students to the central core.
Meanwhile, down in the bowels, Kouji and Ikumi are still racing to escape the closing hatches. Kouji collapses, exhausted by the effort and Ikumi tells him to rest while he scouts ahead. While Ikumi is gone, Kouji encounters the mysterious girl, who asks him if he wants to die. But before Kouji can answer, she vanishes.
Kouji and Ikumi then race towards freedom, following the path scouted by Ikumi. They soon come across the unconscious form of Fainam, who was knocked to the floor and nearly trampled in the stampede to escape earlier. The boys pick her up and carry her with them.
In the central evacuation area, Aoi tries to find any sign of Kouji or Ikumi but there is nothing. She then spies Yuki sitting on a ledge nearby and she soars through the weightless space to confront him. But Yuki is cold and uncaring. "I don't care about him. I have more important things to worry about." he tells Aoi. This upsets Aoi and she yells at him. Yuki responds by shoving her away.
Down in the corridors, Kouji and Ikumi realize that the combination of gravity and Faina's weight will slow them down too much and they decide to risk using the package corridors, which are weightless, to travel the rest of the way. But it is a risky move. If they get lost or encounter a blockage, it could be all over.
Outside, the brave adults have donned space hardsuits and are in the process of manually shedding unnecessary compartments from the crippled ship. One adult asks his son, Pat, to forgive him, since he will not be able to keep his promise of playing with him, as he spins off into the Geduld. But they are successful and huge chunks of the ship begin to drop off.
Inside, the students in the central core are terrified by the sounds and shaking that accompany the separations. In the package corridor, Kouji, Ikumi, and Faina are stuck at a locked hatch when the separation begins and Ikumi cries out in fear, "Are they purging this area?"
The brave, self-sacrificing actions of the adults bought the Liebe Delta precious time. They now have 23 hours to launch the ship to safety. Juli announces to the survivors the situation. She encourages them to be strong and that one of the navigation trainee crew will come down to them soon. But Izumi and Aoi still haven't seen Kouji or Ikumi and Izumi starts to cry, convinced that they are dead.
But just at that moment, they make their triumphant entrance, with Faina between them. All of the students cheer while Aoi accuses the boys of stopping to flirt as the reason they nearly didn't make it. Yuki is not happy with his brother either, calling him foolish for his actions and he storms off.
But the Liebe Delta is still far from safe. They have to get the ship flying before they can declare themselves out of danger and their is another menace lurking within the Geduld awaiting them. This is where the episode ends.
Episode 3: Beyond the Vast Sea
The Liebe is still falling into the Geduld but onboard, the crew of children and students make for a strange mix of intense activity and fear. Some dive right in and give survival their all while others play, hum tunes, or worry about trivial things in this time of danger.
Up on the bridge, Juli does her best to keep progress on track and everyone focused while down in the central core, Kouji checks up on Faina. She is fine but very concerned about the well being of her pet ferret, Rarat. Meanwhile, Aoi and Izumi help by hand out food to the others.
In the corners, trouble is lurking. A subset of students, dangerous looking and mean-spirited, take the opportunity to waylay an upper class student and learn all the details of the disaster. They decide to lay low for the moment and then strike, seizing power for themselves.
Meanwhile, there is even more trouble brewing. The two adults who started the whole event are still onboard and very much alive. And they are not please that the students seem to be managing so well. They decide that they must act soon or all of their plans will be ruin. Unfortunately, Faina happens to cross right in front of their hiding place, searching for her pet, just at that moment.
Back in the central core, tension is high and Kouji is not happy to discover his younger brother, Yuki, in the middle of a heated debate. Yuki doesn't see why he should have to participate in the preparations and the other students think he is stuck up. Kouji dashes over and confronts him and they have a loud argument that reaches its climax when Kouji screams "We could all die!". This upsets the group and one girl starts to cry. Yuki calls Kouji stupid and leaves and Kouji goes and awkwardly apologizes to the girl.
Then another boy comes up to the girl that was crying and blurts out that he loves her. The crowd gasps and the girl smiles shyly and says "Thank you." The crowd erupts in cheers. But then she continues and says "but I am sorry." as she turns him down. The cheering turns to laughter and the would-be lover collapses to the floor as the girl walks away. Aoi goes over to Kouji, smiles at him and says "Tell me." But Kouji doesn;t pick up the signal and instead blandly describes what just occured. Aoi calls Kouji stupid and storms away frustrated.
With Yuki refusing to help. Kouji takes on his tasks as well and Ikumi accompanies him as he does Yuki's chores. As Kouji is finishing, complaining about Yuki the entire time, the mysterious girl appears once again, and Kouji, shocked to see her, blurts out "That girl." "What? Is there someone still here?" Ikumi aska as he looks around but the girl has disappeared once again. Ikumi dashes off in search and Kouji wonders if he is now hallucinating.
Ikumi then suddenly yells from down the corridor and Kouji races up to join him. Ikumi has discovered a room containing the bodies of the other adult crew members and both Kouji and Ikumi wonder aloud what in the world is going on.
Meanwhile, the Zwei, the navigation trainees, are just 58 minutes from launch and Juli thanks everyone for their hardwork and promises that they will all be rescued. The crowd erupts with joy and Aoi wryly comments that Kouji and Ikumi have the worst timing for not being here at this moment.
But those two boys are busy trying to dash to the bridge to inform the Zwei of their discovery. The gang of bad kids have also discover that something is amiss and they, too, are dashing through the ship.
Kouji and Ikumi arrive at the bridge and throw the door open, yelping out that there is trouble down below only to discover the two renegade adults standing on the bridge with a gun to Faina's head. Juli and the other Zwei trainees surround the two men but everyone is frozen by the dire situation of the hostage.
The men order the countdown stopped or they will kill Faina. But members of the Zwei refuse, saying that the lives of nearly 500 students is worth more than 1. But Juli relents and says that she will enter the password to stop the countdown. But before she can act, she is stopped her crew mates and it ends up being Ikumi who offers his life in exchange for Faina and agrees to enter the password. He goes to the terminal and begins typing.
Down in the central core, everyone is unaware of the events unfolding on the bridge. They chat and flirt and go about their normal teenage lives. Yuki and his girlfriend sit on the edge of a platform and the girl asks why he went out with her in the first place and he replies that he thought she might have been his type. She asks if she was his type and he curtly replies "No."
Meanwhile, outside, the ship that has been stalking the Liebel has finally caught up and it fires a number of rocket-propelled cables into the hull of the crippled ship. This causes the Liebel to jolt and that in turn is the start of action on bridge. From under the grates, the gang of bad students leap out and quickly disarm and subdue the two adults. The leader goes as far as to take one of the guns and point it at the back of one of the men's head, intent on killing him. But Ikumi stops him.
With the invaders stopped, the Zwei return their focus to the launch. They inform the students to prepare and then count down to launch. But instead of a smooth acceleration, they get error screens and alarm bells. Something has gone wrong and that something is the ship outside that attached itself with the cable. It is pulling the Liebel down deeper into the Geduld and all the Zwei can do is count the increasing depth as their doom approaches.
It is at that moment that Kouji cries out "I don't want to die!" and something remarkable happens. The mysterious girl reappears and twists, soars, floats, and appears to dance superimposed over the ship. As she moves, so does the ship and the engines ignite. She voices Kouji's thoughts and emotions and they are the energy that powers the ship out of the trap.
On the pirate ship, the captain stands stunned as his prey escapes, dragging him along. He finally orders the cables cut and they bang against the Liebel as the mighty craft powers by them. "The Bratica has been activated" the captain murmurs as he watches the ship soar up out of the Geduld and then race off across space. This is where the episode ends.
Episode 4: Ring of Ryvius
Nobody was prepared for the rapid and rough acceleration the Liebel experinced and the ship is full of injured kids. Many are unconscious and blood cam been seen on many. Up on the bridge, a dazed Kouji recalls an incident some time before back on Earth when Yuki and he fought, with the result being that he was thrown through a glass patio door. Aoi was there at that time too and she rushed to care for Kouji's bloody wounds. But now, the ship is floating in ship and there are many more wounds that need tending.
So the trainees and students do what they where taught and begin to tend to the wounded and the ship. But the sheer numbers are overwhelming and the kids are on the verge of collapse. But somehow they muddle through.
One of the wounded is Faina and after her arm is tend to and put in a sling, Kouji and Ikumi escort her back to the main assembly area. But just before they enter, she thanks them and says that she can go the rest of the way on her own. "Are you sure?" asks Kouji and Faina replies "Should you have a girlfriend, I do not want to disturb her." and she leaves. Kouji stands puzzled by Faina's response and Ikumi encourages him to go after her but he declines and walks away.
The two boys then encounter Kozue and Aoi. Ikumi teases Kozue while Aoi quietly asks Kouji if it is true that all of the instructors are dead. Kouji tells her that he has been ordered not to talk about and she would be wise not to ask.
Elsewhere, the pudgy Zweis trainee that the gang members picked on has been put in charge of the two prisoners. The toughs accompany him and offer their services to rough up the men whenever the need arises. The pudgy boy introduces himself as Good Turtleland the Third and is promptly renamed "Charlie" by the teens. They then leave him behind and go on their way.
Up on the bridge, Juli and the other trainees try to decipher what happened. The ship is now operating on some new program that has introduced full gravity through the craft and is rocketing along an unknown course. Each person offers their speculation but then one of the Zwei discovers a small part of the new system. Whatever it is, it is huge and not part of their training.
Later, after gathering everyone in a large hall, the Zwei prepare to address the survivors and inform them of their plans. Lucson Houjou, the blustery alpha male wanna-be, starts the session but is soon hounded off the stage by the crowd and their questions. Juli then steps forward and take the microphone. She calmly relates the events thus far, telling the students about the sabotage and the instructors' noble sacrifice and the students fall into a shocked silence. She then concludes by telling them that they are not out of the woods yet and, with the help of strategically placed viewing screens, she displayed the first images of the massive ship that Leibel is now attached to. "Our ship is now joined to a previously unknown craft that was hidden within the central shaft. Its name is..." Juli announces but then the mysterious girl appears, and, with a wild look in her eyes, she says "Ryvius".
Juli then proceeds to inform everyone that they will all be transferring to the Ryvius and await rescue. She gives instructions and everyone groans but follows them. The Zwei, meanwhile, board the Ryvius, locate the bridge and begin the process of preparation for transfer.
Meanwhile, outside, the pirates are not done. Even though the ship that attacked the Liebel/Ryvius was destroyed, they managed to get a message sent and the other pirates converge on the huge, drifting craft. They are rushing because they fear that the crew members still on board (they are unsure if there are any instructors still alive) may activate the Ryvius fully.
The Zweis finish their work and everyone prepares to cross over. The last task they have to complete is to form up into small groups of 4 or 5, based on gender and skill set, so that they can room and work together. One group invites Ikumi to join them but he turns them down when they say that they don't want Kouji as well. In the end, Kouji and Ikumi end up forming a group with two other boys, Akihiro and Nicks. Akihiro is a bumbling, heavy set boy while Nicks is a hyperactive ball of energy teenage boy. Together with Aoi, Kozue and one more girl, they all cross over to the new ship.
On the Ryvius, everyone is amazed at the size. They explore every nook and cranny and scramble to find just the right living space. Faina even finds her missing pet, Rafra. Eventually, things start to settle down. Nicks races off to explore, Kouji goes to register their living space, and, up in a different corridor, Juli finds Pat, the young son of one of the instructors, sitting alone and she goes to comfort him. Pat is distraught over the lost of his father and he cries "I want to go home!" into Juli's lap. "I do to. I do to." she tells him as she holds him tight.
Down at the registration hall, Kouji runs into Faina and discovers that she does not have a place to live, so he brings her back to Aoi's room (which is across the hall from his) and ask the girls to accept Faina. They agree and then make a big fuss over the ferret.
Meanwhile, the Zweis are hard at work on the bridge trying to decipher what went wrong with their launch back on the Liebel. They analyze the data and discover the pirate ship. To their great disbelief, it turns out not to be a pirate ship but a special "submarine" spaceship belonging to the Orbital Security Bureau. Uncertain what to make of the revelation, they all crowd around the screen, causing them to miss the alert of an approaching ship on another screen.
The approaching ship is another Orbital Security Bureau craft but this one is much bigger and more powerful. As it nears, it launches smaller ships from its hull. "We must assume control before they can activate the Bratica", the ship's commander orders. Just at that moment, Nicks discovers a huge form lurking in the dark deep with the Ryvius. Could this be the Bratica? This is where the episode ends.
Episode 5: A Little Harmony
Life aboard the Ryvius has assumed some semblance of normalcy. Each of the 487 surviving students contributes has they were trained to do and repairs happen quickly. On the bridge, the Zwei manage the massive effort with efficiency while outside, the level 2s scurry around in support craft, making repairs and surveying damage.
But Yuki is not satisfied with just flitting about close to the Ryvius and he detaches his safety cable and rockets out into space. The bridge immediately demands his return but he ignores them. Then Ikumi decides to give chase and he detaches and follows Yuki out into space.
Yuki only travels a short distance from the ship and then spins around to face the Ryvius. It is only then that the true enormity of the craft becomes apparent. The students knew that it was big, having found space and food for a thousand people for a long and lengthy journey, but the images that Yuki sends back are large and more powerful than they could have ever imagined. The stunned bridge crew silently transmit the live images to the rest of the crew on their viewing screens and every gasps in surprise.
In Juli's cabin, Pat finally falls asleep and Juli kneels down to you her roommates in front of the screen. She shares with then the discovery of the attack by the Orbital Security Bureau ship and the Zwei roommates react with shock. After that passes, they then wonder if a rescue or another attack will come.
Unfortunately for the girls, their sixth sense may be right. Because at that very moment, on Earth, the men behind the original attack meet to discuss how their next assault will commence. They know that they have about 100 hours before the rescue signals the Ryvius is sending out are heard and so they have to act fast. The younger man reports to his superior that the 4th battle fleet is on its way and will reach the ship in 24 hours. Even more ominous for the unsuspecting students is that the conspirators now realize that the ship is staffed only with students. As long as the students don't discover the Bratica, success is assured.
Back on the Ryvius, the Zwei treat everybody and everything as if school was still in session and that means scores for performance in assigned tasks. To Kouji's displeasure, the scores are posted publicly, especially since he ranked 48 while his younger brother took top honors.
Later, in the cafeteria, things go from bad to worst for Kouji when he happens to meet Juli. She informs him that since his younger brother did not register for a team, she has gone ahead and assigned him to Kouji's group. This elicits a yelp from Kouji, who then apologizes and accepts his fate. Yuki does not seem too happy about the turn of events either.
Meanwhile, on the bridge, Juli confronts Lucson about the posting of scores. Lucson defends his actions, saying that it is the captain's (who, of course, is him) responsibility to maintain order and discipline and therefore he will continue training activities while they await rescue. Juli disagrees, saying that the scores will only excite the students and add to their tension.
It is then that they notice two ships approaching on the radar screens. Lucson orders radio contact to be made but the approaching ships do not respond. Stein suggests that something might be amiss but Lucson pooh-poohs the idea that the ships could be anything other than rescuers. It is then that the two ships fire a massive volley of missiles.
Elsewhere, deep inside the ship, two important events are occurring. Over at the Liebel, the gang students distract "Charlie" and kill the two saboteurs. They threaten "Charlie" with the same if he even thinks about revealing their deed. And further inside the Ryvius, Nicks leads Akihiro, Kouji, and Ikumi to the giant form he found earlier. They can now see that it is a huge humanoid robot and, although Akihiro and Nicks think it is cool, Kouji and Ikumi laugh aloud at the idea of building such an absurd machine.
As the missiles hurtle at the ship, Yuki races through the halls to find the other boys. As he approaches, confusion reigns on the bridge. The missiles turn out to be some sort of capture and control device and they attach themselves all over the surface of the Ryvius. Lucson and Juli begin to debate whether these are rescuers or invaders and other crew members begin to break down under the stress.
At the robot, Yuki dashes in and immediately attacks Kouji. He is furious that he has been assigned to Kouji's team and even though Kouji attempts to explain that he did not cause it to happen, Yuki continues to pound away on him. Even Ikumi can't stop the two brothers and ends up getting beaten for his efforts.
During all the stife, the mysterious girl reappears and seems to draw energy from the intense emotions. The result is that the ship begins to energize and creates a massive gravity zone around it. The force destroys the approaching ships and causes the Ryvius to plunge back down into the Geduld. The Oribital Service Bureau forces watch the events unfold and the ship's commander asks how much time remains until "the burst". He is told 6 hours. "We are going to Plan Y" he barks out.
And on Earth, Kouji and Yuki's mother is horrified to learn, while watching a TV report, that the Leibel Delta has been destroyed with all students and instructors killed. The news broadcasts the launch of a rescue ship and promises continuing coverage, when possible. In a boardroom, a powerful man smiles and says "So, they are trying to cover it up." as he watches the same newscast. "They are after the Ryvius" he is told by an underling. "We can not let that happen." is his response and this is where the episode and volume ends.
