Ikki Tousen is a controversial series. It graphically depicts teenage boys and girls brutally assaulting one another and plays very loose with nudity and sexual imagery. And the manga it is based on was successfully prosecuted for plagiarism in Japan.
Ikki Tousen tells the tale of Hakufu Sonsaku, a ditzy blonde whose bust size is far greater than her IQ. She attends one of the 7 high schools of the Kanto region that are locked in a 1,800 year old battle. It is an eternal war between legendary warriors who are constantly reincarnated as hot high schoolers to continue their fight. Adding to the titillation is the fact that some previously male warriors are now curvaceous ladies and vice versa. And no one is quite sure who was who.
J.C. Staff, usually known for less racy matter, nary misses a moment to flash a panty or breast. The fight sequences, like in the manga, tend to focus on innuendo instead of the punches and there is plenty of innuendo. The best description for this series is "Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball - The High School Rumble Edition."
Volume 1: "Legendary Fighter" Plot Summary:
Volume 1 of Ikki Tousen introduces us to the 1,800 year-old legendary battle to rule China. The three would-be kings and their warriors continue to clash in their eternal struggle. Except now, they are high schoolers in the Kanto region of Japan and some of the kings are not so kingly in their panties, mini-skirts and too tight tops.
But we are here for a fight and a fight we shall have. There are 7 high schools battling for dominance in this war and the combatants are ranked by the color of their "magatama" (sacred bead). Warriors can climb to the next level by defeating other warriors and earning a higher rank. Who fights who is generally decided by the school's leader who coordinates the proceedings via cellphone text messages.
By the time the first volume is complete, we have thoroughly met Hakufu Sonsaku, her put-upon cousin and her slightly deranged mother. Plus a slew of warriors good and evil. But Hakufu is who we have come to see and nothing about her is left to the imagination.
