The first episode opens at the Gochiso boardinghouse where, Hibiki Amawa, a recently graduated PE teacher in need of a job has just moved in. An alarm sounds, and a loudspeaker announces that the landlord is coming around to collect the rent. Mori Koji, the surfer/slacker resident is up first but he "defeats" the old lady landlord with his "reflection beam" defense (he carries a large mirror around and use the reflected light to cover his escapes). Unfortunately, he doesn't get very far as she shoots him with a plastic bullet and takes the rent from his prone body.
Next up is boarder #2, Tofu Kuji, who pretends to be dead. But, he comes to life quickly when Ruru, the landlord, fires a round in the futon next to his head. She collects the money and leaves. Hibiki, the newest resident is last. Ruru, kicks in the door and dives in only to find Hibiki's dog, Kura-ge, sitting in the room with a sign reading "I'm out running" around his next. Ruru mutters, "Ordinary people are always harder to deal with."
Meanwhile, Hibiki has finished his jog and stands atop a fence in front of a neighborhood school excitedly declaring that this will be where he works. He dismounts the fence and greets the students streaming towards the school with cheerful "good mornings" as he pass through the crowd. The students eye him warily and some comment that the warm weather brings out the weirdoes.
Fuko Kuzuha, a young female student, is walking up the hill to the school admiring a picture when she notices an empty soda can rolling down the hill. She gives chase only to fall flat on her face. Another student, Akira Fukae, stops the can and picks it up but kicking it into the air and then catch it. Fuko tells him "thank you" and calls his soccer-like move "awesome". Other male students tease him about the comment and Akira tosses the can over his shoulder in disgust. Fuko returns to her can chase and ends up crashing into a trash pile.
Back at the rooming housed, Hibiki joins the other residents for breakfast. He enthusiastically introduces himself to the indifferent crowd and nearly gets his foot shot off when he goes to take a dramatic stance on the edge of the table. The other residents get up, having finished their meals, and leave. Ruru approaches Hibiki and demands the rent but Hibiki pleads poverty. He promises that he will get a job today at the local junior high and pay his rent from an advance on his salary. He dashes off to get the job while Ruru muses out loud "The junior high nearby? That's Seitow Sannomiya Private School. That's impossible."
Up at Seitow Sannomiya Private School, Hibiki muscles his way into Principal's office and announce that he is here to fill the open PE teaching position. He is told that he is not eligible for the job since the school has a strict "female only" policy regarding teachers. The school's motto is "Love is All" and "stupid males" are incapable of providing the nurturing maternal love that a teacher needs to give. The Principal even goes as far as saying that all males are useless and that she will eventually, rid the school of any male presence, whether it is a teacher or student.
Hibiki returns to the boardinghouse and discuss the situation with Ruru. Hibiki refuses to let the Principal win and with Ruru, decides to get the job, even if it means disguising himself as a woman. Soon enough, Hibiki is applying makeup and wearing dress. Under Ruru's supervision, he practices walking and behaving as a woman. Finally, he is ready to go back and confront the Principal but before he leaves, Ruru, who has a Doctorate of Electrical Engineering, presents him with a black choker necklace. It contains a device that changes Hibiki's voice from male to female. Now fully disguised, he heads back to the school.
Once there, she easily fools the Principal into accepting her as a woman but the job is still not her's quite yet. She has to pass a test by teaching one student to run the 50 meter dash without falling down. That task is made harder by the selection of Fuko, the clumsy coffee can chasing girl, as the test student.
Everyone gathers outside for the test and Hibiki is shocked to learn that the girls have to wear long, thick skirts in gym (so that the "stupid males" are not provoked by the sight of skin or leg). Hibiki and Fuko meet and greet each other, and then the class begins. Fuko trips and falls constantly each time she attempts the run. The Hibiki goes to her and whispers in her ear.
On her next attempt, Fuko hikes her skirt up around her hips and dashes down the course. She races all the way to end but stumbles just before the finish line. "Now dive!" Hibiki commands and Fuko throws herself over the line. Hibiki catches her and together they fall to the ground.
As the other students rush up to congratulate Fuko, Hibiki turns to the Principal and, already assuming he has the job, requests an advance on his salary. But, the Principal declines his request. Meanwhile, the students asked Fuko what the new teacher whispered in her ear. "You'll be fine." are the words that were spoken. This is where the episode ends.
The second episode opens with Fuko in her room at the school's dorm. As she changes and reflects on the events at the mock class, she hears a sound outside her window. She opens the curtains to discover a shadowy figure in the tree. She screams in fear, and another girl comes running into the room. She sees the peeping tom as well and gives chase.
The next morning, Hibiki is awakened in his room at the boardinghouse by a smoke grenade. Ruru enters and admonishes him for sleeping in. Hibiki complains that he needs only 5 minutes to get ready and Ruru reminds him that he is now a "woman" and no matter how much time she has, there is never enough time for a woman to get ready. Ruru then opens Hibiki's closet to reveal a secret tunnel to the changing room. There she times Hibiki as he "transforms."
Up at the school, Fuko and her friends eat breakfast and discuss the previous night's events. Signs of the Principal's "poisoning" appear as some of the girls state that human males are nastier and more dangerous than ghosts or monsters. Fujio declares that she knows who the culprit is and leads the group out of the dining room. They stop at the boardinghouse, which also happens to be a shortcut to the school and a school supply store, and confront the tenants. They, of course, deny any involvement. The school bell rings before the truth can be learned and the students head on to class, dragging a protesting and threatening Fujio behind them.
At school, Hibiki is introduced as the new PE teacher and he almost blows it, allowing "as a male" to slip off his tongue before he quickly corrects it in his welcome speech. After the speech is done, Hibiki finds himself in the Principal's office where he is instructed to move into the girl's dorm until the peeping tom crisis is resolved. Hibiki hems and haws but reluctantly agrees.
After school, Fujio and the other girls return to the boardinghouse and accuse Tofu Kuji of being the peeping tom. Hibiki, down in the changing room, hears the confrontation and comes up to investigate. He and Fujio get into an argument which leads to Hibiki drawing a line in the sand outside the house and telling the girls not to cross. It is then that Fuko comes running up with a book and announces that the nightly visitor must be a ghost because there was an execution ground in the neighboring town's distant past. Unfortunately, the thought of a ghost is too much for Fuko and she faints. Hibiki catches her before she hits the ground and Fujio hits him with the standard "angry anime girl" roundhouse punch that sends him flying into the bushes.
That night, Hibiki reports the dorm and is immediately surrounding by the female residents, who tell her how happy and safe they feel with their "sensei" present. Hibiki promises to "kick the dirty man's butt" and the girls urge Hibiki to move in permanently. The girls and Hibiki than discuss who the prime suspects for the peeping tom may be and to Hibiki's horror, his true male identity tops the list. The girls then make things even more uncomfortable for the disguised man by inviting him (who they only know as she) to take a bath with them. Hibiki declines saying that he took one before coming over. Disappointed, the girls leave.
Later, upstairs, Hibiki prepares for bed by donning a long, white nightgown. He catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror and flirts with his image. He sighs and removes his bra, along with its inserts. Just then, there is a knock at the door and Hibiki quickly grabs the undergarment, puts it on, not realizing that one of the breast forms had fallen out, and answers the door. It is Fujio, and she has come to beg Hibiki to sleep with Fuko, who is shaking with fear over the idea of a ghost haunting the dorm. Again, Hibiki narrowly avoids being found out by explaining that the missing breast is the result of "missing lunch."
Hibiki, having agreed to take care of Kuzo, finds himself in bed with the sleeping girl. He tries to distract his mind by reciting the multiplication tables but Kuzo makes thing difficult by clinging on to him and inadvertently touching sensitive areas on Hibiki's body. Hibiki goes to get out the bed, afraid that his willpower is not strong enough, but stops when he hears Kuzo talk in her sleep about the race. Hibiki lies back down and gets a big smile on his face as he enjoys the memory as well.
Suddenly, he pops up and dashes to the window. Perched on the branch outside is Tofu Kuji. He waves and gives a cheerful "ciao" to Hibiki, who replies in kind as a knee-jerk response. Then air raid sirens sound, and searchlights scour the grounds as Tofu makes his escape. Fujio announces that it was definitely one of the men from the boardinghouse and she rallies a large gang of girls to march up to the home. Hibiki realizes that he cannot stop them and decides to run ahead. Fuko, firmly convinced that the peeping tom is a ghost, also runs ahead of the gang to warn the residents.
Hibiki gets to the house first and desperately attempts to remove his female guise as quickly as possible. Fuko arrives next, just moments before the gang of angry girls, and pounds on the front door, yelling for the residents to run for their lives. The gang swarms up around Fuko, and they all fall into the house as a huge pile as the door gives way.
Inside, they discover Tofu and Mori, with incriminating materials in their hands, standing in the lobby. Mori has handfuls of photos of the girls and Tofu has a huge armful of "Fuko" dolls. The girls immediately give chase to the two men. Hibiki arrives just in time to see the mayhem unfold. As he sighs at the craziness, Fuko, who is standing next to him, notices that he is wearing a bra - oops, Hibiki forgot to remove something!
The next morning, the students find Tofu and Mori, badly beaten and wearing signs that say they are sorry, sitting at the table in the boardinghouse as they pass through on their way to class. Fuko as Hibiki, who has returned to his female state and remains undiscovered, if all men are like the men from last night and the episode ends with Hibiki saying that every man is different and has his good and bad points.
The third episode opens with Hibiki asking Ruru for a pleated skirt right in front of the other boarders. He answers their quizzical looks by demonstrating that girls just cannot move freely in the heavy skirts they are required to wear for gym class. He then asks Ruru if she carries "burumas" (Japanese for girl's gym shorts - a loan word from "bloomers"). She replies yes but wants to know why he asks. Outside, Mori and Tofu eavesdrop and become excited at the notion of junior high school girls in the short and tight fitting burumas.
Hibiki then heads out side to stretch in the bright morning air. As he soaks up the sun, he talks aloud about his excitement at finally being able to teach an actual gym class. But, his speech is interrupted when he finds himself called "bra man" by a passing Fuko. Hibiki attempts to correct her misunderstanding but she backs away from the "scary, perverted" man. This causes her to trip and the bag she is carrying spills its contents on the street. Hibiki helps her gather the carrots and other vegetables back into the bag and learns that she is off to feed the school pets. He sends her on her way and then sighs, "I am pathetically misunderstood."
At school, Hibiki attends a morning faculty meeting where men are again labeled "savages" and then heads to teach his class. First up is homeroom, where the students warmly welcome the new teacher. Hibiki returns the smiles and silently thanks them all. He then asks for a volunteer to be the class representative for the upcoming visit to a retirement home. Nobody raises their hand immediately but Fuko eventually volunteers. The boys then ask what the first gym activity will be and Hibiki replies "the vaulting horse," which causes Fuko to sigh "not good." Hibiki then dismisses the boys but asks the girls to remain.
Hibiki then introduces the girls to the burumas and tries to convince them to wear them. But despite his pleadings and the girls agreement that the skirts are troublesome, the girls decline to wear them. They say that the garments will only serve to please and incite the boys. Hibiki replies that they will never know until they try but the girls still refuse. Then Fujio goes to the door and opens it suddenly, causing two of the boys to spill into the room. Hibiki sighs at the difficulties.
Outside, Mori awaits the appearance of buruma-clad girls on the roof. He has his camera and mirror and he is ready to shoot. But before anything can happen, Ruru swoops down on a hang glider and lassos the pervert. She does the same to Tofu, who was waiting behind a tree on the ground.
Meanwhile, exercise class has begun and the girls vault wearing the long skirts. When Kuzo's turn arrives, she has greatly difficultly due to the skirt. Hibiki points out that she would not have the same the problems if she wore burumas instead. The other girls then challenge Hibiki - if you like them so much, why are you wearing them? Kuzo pipes up that she will wear the shorts and they other girls display looks of shock, disgust, and embarrassment. Hibiki then agrees to wear buruma as well.
In the bathroom, Hibiki sits dejectedly on the toilet, certain that he will now be found out, thanks to the burumas. But, Ruru suddenly appears over the top of the stall and comes to the rescue by providing a "heavy-duty supporter." Hibiki thanks her and the class resumes.
The boys admire Hibiki and Fuko in their tight fitting shorts and Hibiki, disgusted at the feeling of being ogled, orders the boys to do 10 laps for interfering. Then she instructs Fuko to try to vault again. This time, Fuko manages to reach the end of the horse without incident. Hibiki points out the success and attributes it to the burumas. Unfortunately, the vice-principal happens to look out the window and see the pants just as the boys run by chanting "buruma, buruma, buruma!"
As a result, Hibiki is called to the office and is reprimanded by the Principal. Hibiki attempts to argue her point that the skirts are old fashion and dangerous but the Principal is more concerned about the boys' behavior and orders Hibiki to refrain from such "grandiose actions" in the future. As she returns to her classroom, Hibiki runs into Fuko in the hall.
Fuko is returning some lab equipment to the storage room. Fuko asks if "Sensei" got in trouble for the burumas and Hibiki replies "a little." Hibiki then asks whether Fuko found them helpful and she replies that she did. Hibiki suggests that they practice more, in the burumas, after school but Fuko declines, citing her prior duties as the homeroom's volunteer committee representative. Later, Fuko and Hibiki collide again in the hall. This time, Fuko is returning maps for the social studies teacher. Hibiki senses something is wrong and she looks up Fuko's assignments in the teacher's lounge and discovers that she overloaded with duties.
Back in homeroom, Hibiki announces that the class has to select a new representative for the volunteer committee. He tells that they can pick anyone but Fuko and admonishes them for letting one person do all the work. Then Hibiki is called to the faculty lounge. He tells the class to pick the new member, and then they can leave. Hibiki goes to the lounge and, as soon as the door closes, the class starts to grouse over the issue. But, Fuko stands and says that it is okay, she will still do the job.
Hibiki returns to find Fuko, sitting alone in the room, cutting flowers in preparation for the visit to the retirement home. He asks why she is so willing to take on such a large load and Fuko replies that it makes her happy, which leaves Hibiki puzzled.
The next morning, Hibiki lectures the class. She tells them that they are mean and selfish for dumping everything on Fuko, even if they did it in a passive and unintentional way. While Hibiki talks, Fujio recalls a scene from the previous night, where the other girls came home to find Fuko practicing her vaulting on the dorm couch because she had to pass on the offered practice due to the workload. Some students then rise up to volunteer to take on some of the jobs, but they are shocked when Hibiki tells that is not good enough and they that they still don't get it.
Hibiki then asks them don't they realize that they are a group, with the bonds that are formed by the very nature that they study, play, and live together? And, as a group, that they should look out for one another and be aware of each other feelings? Hibiki then turns to leave the room and orders Fuko to come with her.
In the locker room, Hibiki offers Fuko the choice of wearing either the buruma or the skirt. As Fuko ponders the choice, the other girls enter and announce that they all will wear the burumas. If they are all wearing them, then there is no reason for embarrassment. They also apologize to Fuko for making her do all the work and offer to help. As the girls exit the room, dressed in their burumas, they find the boys waiting outside. They apologize to Fuko as well.
On the exercise field, Fuko clears the vaulting horse for the first time and faces of all the students are lit up with smiles. The Principal and Vice-Principal appear and demand an explanation. Hibiki responds by pointing to the smiles and announces that the students are enjoying the class from the bottom of their hearts. The Principal "humphs" and leaves.
Later, back at the rooming house, Hibiki fills Ruru in on the events of the day, concluding with the fact that burumas are now acceptable gym clothing at the school. Ruru laments that she lost money on the deal since the students chose to buy their shorts from someone other than she and she pulls a lever that causes a huge pile of shorts to fall onto the floor. Hibiki asks what will she do with them and Ruru replies that she will wear them. This causes Hibiki, Mori, and Tofu to fall flat on their faces and this is where the episode ends.
The fourth episode opens with a flashback depicting a young Kuzo crying at the hospital bedside of her mother. The scene then shifts to the outdoor swimming pool on the school grounds where the boys are cleaning the empty pool. The boys complain aloud that the Vice-Principal sees them as nothing more than janitors. Feeling that it is not right that the boys have to do all the work, Hibiki joins them. The girls pass by and see Hibiki helping the boys and ask why a woman is doing a man's job. Hibiki replies that cleaning is everyone's job and then he threatens the girls teasingly with a hose, "Help us or else!" The girls run away laughing except for Fuko whom, predictably, falls flat on her face.
Inside the school, the Vice-Principal and the Principal discuss the upcoming Parent's weekend. They both agree that it is a good thing except "that man" will come. The phone then rings and "that man," Tokugawam is on the other end. It turns out that he is the Director for the school, and he has called to trade barbs with the Principal about Parent's weekend and her "female education" policy. The Principal finishes the call and hangs up. She turns to the Vice-Principal and asks what class will be observed this year and the Vice-Principal responds that Hibiki's class, Indigo, is this year's class.
In the classroom, Hibiki informs the students about the upcoming weekend. He tells that there will be a special PE class, so their families should be on-time. He tells them to write it down in a memo, so that they do not forget it. Then the announcement chimes ring and Hibiki is called to the Vice-Principal's office.
Having learned that his class is to observed by the Director, Hibiki marches out of the school and towards home with resolve in his step. He meets Kuzo along the way, and they decide to walk together. Hibiki tells Kuzo about his excitement for the weekend and then Hibiki asks Kuzo who will be coming from her family. "Nobody," answers Kuzo. Her father works overseas, and her Mother died when Kuzo was 6 years old. Hibiki says she is sorry but Kuzo sweeps it cheerfully away and marches off humming a happy tune, leaving Hibiki standing motionless in the road.
That night, Hibiki, in his male form, reflects on the weekend. He decides that he became too caught up in his own feelings and forgot to consider the students and their families. He then gets and idea and asks Ruru if she can obtain 30 adult sized exercise outfits for the weekend. Upstairs, Mori and Tofu, having learned it is Parent's weekend, plot something sneaky.
Saturday morning arrives and Kuzo gets off to a rocky start, having overslept. She quickly dresses and then takes a small, brown case out of her dresser. She opens it, smiles, and then closes it, taking it with her as she leaves for the school.
At the school, Mori and Tofu attempt to enter but are stopped by the guards. The guards ask whether they are family, and they answer yes but the two men's confidence drops when they hear the rumble of a motorcycle's motor approaching. Ruru races up on the bike and fires a few rounds at the perverts. They dash off and Ruru gives chase. During the pursuit, Kuzo is bumped and the brown case, which contains a photo of her mother is knocked into a swift moving drainage canal. Kuzo prepares to jump in after it but Hibiki stops her. Hibiki then jumps down and tries to recover the case but it slips through a grate before Hibiki can reach it.
Hibiki returns to Kuzo and apologizes for not rescuing the photo. Kuzo says that it is okay and Hibiki replies that Kuzo is a lot stronger than she looks. Kuzo answers that she once was a real crybaby but her mother told her "No matter what, always keep smiling."
Back at the school, Hibiki worries about the pain that Kuzo must be feeling on the inside and places a call to Ruru to ask her to find something for him. Up in the Principal's office, the Director and Principal "enjoy" each others company by exchanging more polite barbs.
Outside, the parents and students have gathered for the gym class. As they wait for Hibiki, the parents wave to their children and the kids groan about their doting fathers and mothers. Then Hibiki comes out and asks all the parents to change into the training suits he has brought. The Vice-Principal overhears this and tells Hibiki that she will do no such thing, but she is overridden by the Director, who thinks it is an interesting idea. The parents think so as well and all change.
With everyone changed, Hibiki announces that the first activity will be a marathon run and he instructs the parents to run with their children. The whole troop starts off, and Hibiki drops back to tell Kuzo that she can take as long as she wants but that he wants her to finish the course. The families race along, and the parents and kid connect in new and wonderful ways. Hibiki leads the course on and not before long, the race is on the beach. Hibiki then leads Kuzo up into park-like setting and right on to her mother's grave. "Why don't you have a visit with your mother?" she tells Kuzo.
The scene flashes back to the hospital where her mother tells the young Kuzo to smile through the tears. She tells the little girl that she loves her smile and wishes to see it again. The scene returns to the present and Kuzo thanks Hibiki for the opportunity to visit with her mother.
The episode ends as Hibiki carries Kuzo piggyback to the school. At the school, the Director comments that this was the best Parent's weekend ever and that is where the episode and this volume end.
