Wouldn't you like your own pretty maid? Someone who would clean the house, cook the meals, make the bed (and maybe even share that bed with you), and even was computer literate? How much would you be willing to pay for that privilege?
Well, for poor and penniless college student Kazuya, that bill comes to $1,450,000 (thanks to the interfering actions of his arch rival, Nanbara).
Now, Kazuya is the master of a 1-foot tall cyborg maid called May and she is much more than a handful. Between jealous girls (both cybernetic and flesh-and-blood), the insane Nanbara, and a ramen-obsessed collection agent, Kazuya's life has been turned inside out and upside down.
Hand Maid May doesn't break any new ground, but it is a pleasant romp. The animation is crisp, and colorful and the characters are broad and humorous. Though the plot is well-worn (you can see how it is all going to end by the beginning of the second episode), this anime is fun and bouncy, just like its fun and bouncy opening.
Volume 1: "Maid to Order" Plot Summary:
Kazuya is your typical poor Tokyo college student. He lives in a one-room apartment in a slightly rundown complex and has an attractive young woman living just across from his window. Now if he could just get his "smart" robot Ikariya working, his life would be nearly perfect.
Unfortunately, there is a very large dark cloud in his sky that goes by the name Nanbara. This college rival has resented Kazuya for years, and he thinks he has found the perfect revenge - a computer virus. Once loaded on Kazuya's machine, the havoc it will wreak will ruin Kazuya. Well, the virus does cause trouble but the results are not quite what Kazuya or Nanbara expected - a 1-foot tall cyborg maid called May!
Now Kazuya finds himself stuck with a $1.45 million dollar bill AND a clumsy but lovable miniature maid. To make matters even worst, May's maker has sent a pushy collection agent to get the money or the maid goes back to the factory.
Not before long, Kazuya's small apartment becomes even more crowed as other ladies join May and Kazuya. How will it all turn out? How will Kazuya ever pay off that bill? And will Nanbara ever stop laughing?
