Lately, Japanese history has been going through a fair bit of renovation. Samurai Gun has gun-toting samurais. Moeyo Ken has 14th century Japanese racing around in cars and even Gasaraki posits that the ancient Japanese had large robot suits handy.
So, is it stretching it a bit too far to propose that during Japan's Warring States period that there was an overly-buxom blond haired woman running around sharp-shooting her way through difficulties? Not for the creators of Grenadier: The Beautiful Warrior it is not.
This anime is firmly in the "don't ask, just accept" category. The woman has a revolver and can reload it from a seemingly endless supply of bullets buried in her ample cleavage. Don't ask where she got the gun nor how she does the reload trick, just enjoy the moment are the implied instructions. And if you follow that advice, you will, if you are into that type of anime, be entertained. Grenadier does not break any new boundaries (except possibly bust size) and the situation is quickly setup.
The animation is clean and well colored. The rest of the package is solid but middle of the pack. I doubt that there will be many fan sites dedicated to this series. But if this is what you consider to be "light, bouncy fun", you won't be disappointed.
Volume 1: "Service With A Smile" Plot Summary:
In this first volume of Grenadier, we meet Rushuna Tendo. the buxom blond with a gun. She is on a quest to end violence and what better way to do that than with a revolver? While bathing in an open air hot spring, she meets swordsman Yajiro Torajima and the big journey is on.
The action is a predictable series of meeting villian, trying all sorts of resolutions, a few moments of naughty boy stumbling on half-naked girl and finally pulling out the gun for a bit of sharp shooting. Repeat until adventure is complete.
