It's 1969 and Japan is going through difficult growing pains. Yes, the recovery from WWII is well underway and with it, a certain way of life is disappearing but these pains are of a different sort. The sort that happens when Invaders transform your citizens into mindless killer androids and your only hope rests with a handful of special teenagers.
Gate Keepers is a delightful series that combines warm sentimentality with James Bondsian Sci-Fi. It follows the trials and adventures of a group of Japanese teenagers with the rare ability to access other dimensions, known as "Gates", and use those powers to combat "Super Science Invaders." Each student's power is keyed to their personality and, being teenagers, getting them to work smoothly together is a bit of the old "herding cats" scenario. But, their hearts are pure and their determination is true, which makes them a joy to watch.
Gonzo and Executive Director Junichi Sato lavish much care on this work. The backgrounds are beautifully painted and the animation is drawn wonderfully. The entire team must have spent many fun hours inventing all of the nifty Q-worthy transforming cars, planes and buildings and "sliding down the pole to the secret base" routines.
This is a series that will please a broad range of anime fans. There are moments of intense action and moments of intense comedy. The story is interesting and every detail has been sweated. Simply a solid, enjoyable watch.
Volume 1: "Open The Gate!" Plot Summary:
In the first volume of Gate Keepers, we meet A.E.G.I.S. - the top secret organization created to combat the mysterious Invaders. This organization uses the latest (circa 1969 and beyond) technology to marshall a defense. But their primary line of attack are the Gate Keepers. Unfortunately, they only have one on hand.
Her name is Ruriko Ikusawa and her Gate ability is to generate powerful plasma arrows that she fires with her special bow. She can also create a healing force that cures wounds and injuries. When the Invaders attempt to steal A.E.G.I.S.'s new Gate Amplifier, she finds herself in a dangerous position as the Invaders threaten to overwhelm her with huge numbers.
To her great fortune, a boy from the neighborhood, enraged by the destruction and threat to his cherished home, suddenly generates a new and very powerful Gate. Though his actions are untrained, he defeats the invaders and saves the day. His name is Shun.
Together, Shun and Ruriko form the core of the team. Can they find more Gate Keepers before the Invaders? Can they even get along? The future of Japan rests on those answers.
