Episode 1: Life Sympathy
The story opens at a Tokyo construction site. While excavating the foundation of a new City Hall, a mysterious artifact is discovered. The foreman, not wanting any delays by an archeological search, orders the finder to get rid of it. The screen splits in two, and we see two different versions of the same moment. On the left, the man pockets the item while, on the right, he throws it over the fence. Time then jumps 22 years forward.
Kazuki is asleep on the keyboard of his computer. He wakes and realizes that he is running late. While the credits and opening music play, we see him prepare for school. He leaves the house and heads off with the rest of the students. He walks alone, and his classmates snicker behind his back.
Then, unexpectedly, a missile explodes right next to Kazuki. He turns and looks towards downtown and sees a huge robot standing in the rubble. But, when he turns back, the robot and the damage are gone. His classmate whisper loudly about how strange Kazuki is.
Later, at school, Kazuki finds himself in trouble after he inadvertently yelps in class as he watches another battle occur outside. After class, he uses his handheld computer to check his email. There, he runs into Mitsuki Sanada, the most popular girl in school. She asks him about the robots and Kazuki tries to it play off. But, he has another vision while Mitsuki is there. She asks him to describe what he sees and then makes a mysterious phone call.
As Kazuki leaves for home, Mitsuki follows. She tries to take his arm as they walk between the playing fields filled with leering jocks but Kazuki brushes her off. She asks why he is so distrustful, and he replies that a beautiful girl like her must have a hidden agendum to be hanging out with someone like him. It is then that he is carried off by a crowd of jocks, and a comical chase ensues. Mitsuki helps him by finding a hiding place where the guys would never follow, a lingerie shop.
After escaping the jocks, Mitsuki and Kazuki head to Mitsuki's home. Inside, Kazuki finds himself at the mercies of Mitsuki's mad scientist father, Ken. He is fascinated that Kazuki can sees the robots and wants to find out why. Ken explains that he believes there is a parallel world that affects the going on in our world. Ken then reveals that he has constructed a machine that will send Kazuki to that parallel world. Mitsuki stops her dad from activating the machine but then starts it accidentally herself. Lights blaze and Kazuki is transported away.
Kazuki finds himself in the same lab but it is now an abandoned room with rusting equipment. Upstairs he finds the home empty. The same is true for the city. It is barren of any sign of life. Kazuki hears a loud sound and soon one the giant robots comes crashing down next to him. A piece of flying glass cuts his cheek, and he realizes that this not a vision. The robot is badly damaged and Kazuki approaches it.
From inside a young woman emerges but she is injured. Kazuki climbs inside the robot with the girl in his arms and the machine closes around him. He finds himself cast in the role of pilot for the giant robot. The enemy approaches and fires but somehow Kazuki manages to make the robot dodge the attack. The enemy robot continues to fight and Kazuki becomes angry. His anger allows him to connect to the machine, and he quickly defeats the enemy.
The injured pilot awakes and looks on Kazuki with loving eyes. The doors of the robot open and Kazuki surveys the damaged battlefield. He is overwhelmed by the events battle and of the day. He wonders alone what to do next. This is where the episode ends.
Episode 2: My Home
Help arrives for the injured pilot but Kazuki has already left. Only his coat, which he placed as a blanket over the hurt girl, leaves any sign that he was there. As the helicopters and repair crews approach, the scene cuts away to a control room.
In the control room, the commanders of the robots review the events of Kazuki's battle. They are mystified to who ran the robot and how the "life sympathy" of the robot can be a negative number. But, the cameras were damaged and they cannot see inside the robot. All they hear is a male voice saying "enemy down." The robots are then returned to the base.
Meanwhile, Kazuki rummages through a drugstore gathering supplies. He returns to the site of the battle, intending to help the pilot but finds both the robot and pilot gone.
Back at the robot base, the scientists are mystified to how the unit operated in the negative range. While they seek their answers, the project leader listens to the full recording of Kazuki from the cockpit. One of the pilots from the other robot listens in but leaves the room without commenting, apparently unhappy to learn the identity of the mystery pilot.
Out in park, Kazuki records the day's events into his handheld computer. He still can't believe that he operated on the giant robots he had only seen in visions before. In the hospital, the silver-haired girl, Yayoi, lies in bed, recovering from her wounds. Her grandmother enters and overhears her say "my prince." Yayoi is embarrassed but her grandmother lets it pass. Yayoi asks how the battle turned out and learns of the success.
Outside, Kazuki wanders around. He spies a truck and sees a large crowd walking behind it. He recognizes his friends in the crowd and runs down to meet them. He races up to his best friend and begins to describe the events, but the boy pushes Kazuki away, claiming not to know him. Kazuki dashes off to find his home. He locates it, but his room is a storage space.
As he stands dumbfounded, he hears his parents enter. He runs down to meet them, but they do not recognize him either. Kazuki is confused and his father tosses him out, calling him a looter. Kazuki looks up at his parents and then sees the family nameplate on the front of the house. It's the right house, and it has his parent's name but his name is missing. Kazuki's eyes open wide in surprise and shock. He bows, apologizes and runs away into the night.
He then finds his school, with the same damage as he had seen in his vision. He has a flashback to the lab and the words of Ken Sanada about a parallel world. As he stands and wonders what to do, he is suddenly blinded by the lights of military jeeps. From out of the shadows, Mitsuki appears and Kazuki is overjoyed. But, she says "I thought you would come here. This is the guy we are looking for. Take him away." With that, Kazuki is taken into custody.
They bring him to Earth Defense Force headquarters, which Kazuki recognizes as city hall. There, he encounters Ken Sanada again, repeating the scene he had experienced in his (Kazuki's) world. Ken reveals that everyone has a counterpart in each parallel world. But Kazuki is special. He does not have a counterpart in this world which makes him unique. But before Kazuki can get the answers he wants, Ken is called away.
Ken leaves Kazuki in the care of Mitsuki. Kazuki soon learns that Mitsuki is also a victim of the parallel world transporter and is trapped in this alternate world as well. As they discuss their situation, she fills Kazuki in on how this world works. She tells him how her father and Dr. Rara excavated an artifact 22 years ago and that discover lead to the construction of the robots. But, Dr. Rara turned evil and is now bent of world domination.
As they speak, Rara's spokeswoman, Miss Rah, gives a speech describing the location of the next battle. Mitsuki moves closer and tells Kazuki a very special secret. The reason he was brought to the headquarters and why everyone is so interested in him is because, thus far, only women have been able to pilot the robots.
As the episode draws to a close, the story jumps back and forth between Ken and the UN commander, Akane and Mitsuki and Kazuki. The Akane demands to know who piloted the damaged robot and Mitsuki announces that she and Kazuki are essential to the survival of this parallel world. The episode ends with Kazuki saying "You have got to be kidding."
Episode 3: Illegal Guy
The third episode opens with Kazuki lying in bed listening to the radio. As the broadcaster announces the evacuation plans for the residents in preparation for Rara's attack, Kazuki thinks back over Mitsuki's words. "We are both involved," she said but why me? he muses aloud.
The story shifts to the Earth Defense Headquarters where Mitsuki and Kazuki report for training. As they wait for the elevator, Kazuki blurts out that he is here to be a pilot and Mitsuki elbows him to keep quiet. "Your very existence must remain secret," she hisses. Down in the base, they first stop at the cafeteria but it is crowded so Mitsuki rushes Kazuki through. With food in hand, they go to meet Commander Ken Sanada.
When they enter, they find the commander already at work. He is talking to a young girl with green hair. He tells her good work even though she has not spoken a word. She turns to leave and walks stiffly towards the door. As she reaches Kazuki, she stops and turns. He says hello but stops suddenly. Instead of a left eye, she has an opening that reveals a strange blue-white ball of energy. The girl, to everyone's amazement, speaks and introduces herself as "D". She then leaves the room.
Commander Ken then explains that D is not human but a bioroid. D is an amalgamation of an alien life form (discovered inside the artifact) and a cloned body. The scientist created her in hopes of learning more about the artifact and in saving the extraterrestrial. Kazuki asks why her eye glows and the best explanation Mr. Sanada can give is that it is her soul.
Ken, Mitsuki and Kazuki then head into the Core Robot Hangar. Ken offers Kazuki the opportunity to pilot the red and white robot, Hartzenen. Kazuki scrambles up into the cockpit and takes control.
Outside, Ken explains how the robots work in more depth. He tells Kazuki that the ability to operate the robot depends on the pilot's "life sympathy" or will to control. By placing his hands on the sympathy orbs, the pilot transmits his life sympathy to the core, which then commands the robot. Kazuki tries a few steps and then launches Hartzenen, the robot, forward at jet speed. He quickly crosses the practice field and nearly collides with an office building.
But at the last moment, he makes the huge robot leap over the building. Mitsuki is amazed and the commander orders Kazuki to return to the practice grounds.Kazuki returns to the field and skates around in the robot. He launches skyward and soars over the city; his face filled with pure joy.
Back on ground, he heads to the Commander's office. Inside Akane and Ken celebrates Kazuki's skill but Akane is dismayed to learn that Ken does not plan to force Kazuki to become a pilot. As Kazuki overhears the conversation, he turns and leaves. Akane, frustrated by Ken's behavior, tells him that Ken is responsible for make the right choices and if he won't do it, she will.
Meanwhile, Hiroshi Rara reviews footage of Kazuki's first battle in Hartzenen. He is confounded by the apparent readings that say that the core robot exceeded are known capabilities. "What have you done now, Sanada?" he asks himself.
Back in Ken's office, Akane calls Kazuki in and makes her pitch for him to become a core pilot. Kazuki quickly agrees, although Akane has not finished her speech. Kazuki justifies his decision by saying the fastest way for him to get home is to help end the war. He then turns and leaves.
After spending the night within Hartzenen studying her controls, Kazuki awakes to find battle preparations underway. He, D and Mitsuki suit up and climb into the robots. They arrive at the designated site and take their positions. During the wait, Kazuki tries to cram in a little more study. But, soon enough the time arrives. Miss Rah announces the battle and introduces the enemy robot "Ancient Arms."
Kazuki panics and attacks too early. Ancient Arms quickly gets Hartzenen in trouble and Mitsuki has to come to the rescue. The enemy turns to confront Mitsuki and Kazuki collapses in shock. But, the battle does not go well for either Mitsuki or D. They are disabled and it falls on Kazuki to save the day.
At first, he is unclear what to do but it soon dawns on him that his will to save Mitsuki is the force he needs to defeat Ancient Arms. Focused on this single task, he becomes unstoppable and quickly destroys the robot.
In the aftermath, Mitsuki and Miss Rah exchanges glances, the ground troops begin the cleanup amid celebrating their victory and Kazuki tries to put the battle into perspective. He apologizes to Mitsuki, saying he didn't really understanding how dangerous the war was. Mitsuki doesn't follow him and he explains further that she could have died out there.
As D pats him on the head, Mitsuki tells Kazuki that if they had been in any real trouble they could have sent out the call sign and the battle would have ended without loss of life (in exchange for territory). Kazuki sighs and wonders aloud what sort of crazy place has he found himself in. This is where episode three ends.
Episode 4: No Disguise
The fourth episode opens with Mitsuki arriving home. She notices that the front door is unlocked, and she assumes her father is home early. She starts putting the groceries away and then hears a noise upstairs. She goes to investigate and finds her dad (Commander Ken) and Kazuki in an empty bedroom. The commander has decided that since Kazuki has nowhere to live, he should live with him and Mitsuki. Mitsuki voices her strong objection to the decision without any regard for Kazuki's feelings. Ken gently reminds Mitsuki that she is not his daughter and that the same generosity needs to be extend to Kazuki.
Downstairs, Ken receives a call from Akane telling him that he has a call on the hot line from Rara. The Commander returns to the base to take the call. There, he plays a game of verbal cat and mouse with Mr. Rara. But, he almost gives the secret away. Luckily, Akane cuts off the transmission before the slip up. She admonishes the commander for his carelessness, but Ken has a plan to throw off Rara.
Back at the house, Kazuki cleans his room and Mitsuki learns that her dad will not be home tonight. Mitsuki prepares dinner, although she substitutes her special sukiyaki for a more mundane dish when she learns that Ken will not be home.
Meanwhile, at the base, Ken studies the data from Kazuki's piloting and has a visitor in the form of Yayoi, the girl Kazuki saved when he first arrived in this strange new world.Mitsuki and Kazuki try to get through the evening but it is awkward. Kazuki breaks the dishes and Mitsuki jumps every time Kazuki enters or speaks. The phone breaks the silence. It is Ken, and he asks for Kazuki to come to the base immediately. Mitsuki joins him and they head out.
At the base, Kazuki is given a new battle suit. To his dismay, the suit is designed to make him appear and sound like a girl. Mitsuki laughs and laughs until Ken makes a snide comment about her figure. Mitsuki runs from the room in embarrassment.
The next day, Kazuki is introduced to the rest of the team as a girl. But, all the team members burst out laughing. Kazuki runs in shame and the commander and Akane have to send a search team to bring him back. They trap in a corridor and Akane pleas with him. While she speaks, Mrs. Nanjoin opens the other door and leads Kazuki out. She draws him to the hangar bay where he meets Yayoi. She gives him a more suitable set of clothes, and he is grateful. She then turns and leaves. From the wings, Mitsuki observes the entire scene.
The episode ends with Kazuki agreeing to wear the female suit for one battle in exchange for the promise that Ken will make a male suit. Ken agrees and Kazuki, D and Mitsuki prepare to launch. As his suit swings into position, Kazuki spies Yayoi standing on a platform. She waves to him but the Mitsuki has also seen her. She pops in (via video screen) and demands to know what is going on. D chimes in as does Commander Sanada. Finally, Kazuki launches and this is the end of the episode and video.
