Review:

This is one of those moments where traveling to your house (no matter where you are right now), dragging you in front of the television and popping Cromartie High School in the DVD player is infinitely easier than trying to describe this madcap, hilarious and sometimes completely perplexing anime.

Based on a surreal short-form gag manga of the same name, Cromartie High School delves into the minds of some of the strangest characters you will ever meet. There are Freddie Mercury look-alikes, smart gorillas, robots that nobody seems to notice are robots and endlessly bizarre high school boys. And the seemingly normal narrator, Kamiyama, is a few cards short of a full deck.

Production I.G., normally known for complex creations of exactitude like "Ghost In The Shell" and "Blood: The Last Vampire", let their hair down big time on this project. And they had fun doing it, as the visuals of this anime can attest. There is a wonderful hand-drawn quality that captures the feeling of a manga but still allows inventive animation. The script is a joy of absurdity and the performances - Japanese and English - are laugh out loud great.

Cromartie High School is a difficult anime to target for the usual audience. There isn't a big quest to complete or even any attempt at a through plot. It's a sequence of comedic gems, like a Whitman's Sampler of Whimsy waiting to be devoured. Enjoy!

Volume 1: "No. 1" Plot Summary:

Sit back and enjoy as you watch perhaps the funniest 100 minutes of animation ever to escape the Japanese mainland. Enormous gorillas, purple mohawks, men in pink bunny suits and afro-sporting Nihonjin (Japanese people) will cavort before you and no illegal substances are required.

You have been warned.
