A strangely compelling short series, Angel Sanctuary combines love, mystic powers and supernatural action into one winning spell. Crisp characters and surehanded direction give this anime it's strength. The story, one of resurrection and love, is told with conviction and the atmosphere is spot on. Although there are themes of incest running through out, they are treated as plot elements and are left somewhat ambiguously. Given that, this would not be a good video for folks that are not open to the idea as a dramatic device.
Volume 1: "Can Love Survive The Wrath of Heaven" Plot Summary:
A high school boy called Setsuna Mado is a tormented soul. Not only is he haunted by visions and vistors accusing him of being the reincarnation of one of Heaven's mightiest angels but he is also desperately in love with his own sister.
Setsuna finds himself being chased and attacked constantly as two sides of a battle that has being waging for eons between Heaven and Hell strive to win the powers of the angel slumbering within Setsuna. Meanwhile, Setsuna only seeks to protect his sister while trying to quell the forbidden feelings he harbors within.
Ultimately, everything comes to a head and it all depends on the heart and soul of this troubled young man as to whether the entire material realm will continue to exist. What will be Setsuna's fateful decision when forced to choose life for the world or death for those he loves?
