1: The Movie
Ning, is your just your ordinary, run of the mill kind of guy. He has a girl he loves, Siu Lan, and would pursue her to the ends of the earth. They want to get married but there is one small obstacle in the way; Ning is poor.
The movie opens with Siu Lan heading off to meet her future husband who, unlike Ning, has his feet on the ground and roof over his head. But Ning is not far behind. When he catches up to the caravan, Siu Lan tells him it is over and hands him back the dog, Solid Gold, that he had given her as a token of their love. The procession fades off into the sunset, leaving Ning and Solid Gold standing alone on, most appropriately, Lonesome Road. Heartbroken, Ning accepts a job as a debt collector, with the idea that he could earn enough money to regain the love of Siu Lan.
Ning soon encounters Ten Mile and White Cloud, powerful exorcists, at a haunted temple. They quickly dispatch the ghosts that live there and Ten Mile cautions Ning to forget their names, tell no one they were there, and to avoid the rest of the ghost hotspots down the road. Ning agrees and they part ways.
A little later, Ning arrives at a mysterious town. While taking in the sights, he sees a beautiful woman pass and falls in love at first sight. But Ning realizes quickly that this is a ghost town and he is in danger. The pretty woman, Siu Seen, seems to have a dark agenda and another exorcist, Red Beard, has arrived to clear the town of its ghostly inhabitants.Ning escapes with Siu Seen and saves her from being destroyed by the rising sun. It appears that Siu Seen is actually a ghost herself and is employed to bring the souls of the newly dead to Mistress Trunk, so that she may feed on them to maintain her youthful appearance.
More adventures occur as Ning, Solid Gold, and Siu Seen are pursued by Siu Deep, Siu Seen's sister, and by all three of the exorcists. They also run into a dark god, Siu Seen's temperamental boyfriend, who turns on her after she accidentally damages his hair.
A love grows between Siu Seen and Ning, and together they decide to board the Train of Reincarnation. Their plan is to be reborn and live together forever. But first they have to get pass the Gate and dodge the Void Hammers or their plans will be ruined.
Just as they are about to reach the Gate, White Cloud and Ten Mile show up and begin to battle with the Train. Red Beard, tired of their interference, counterattacks. While the battle between the exorcists rages, Siu Seen and Ning enter the Gate. They dodge the hammers but are separated in the confusion. Sui Seen shouts out where she will be on the other side and cries "that she will wait for him forever."Ning, though is thrown out through the Gate and is therefore not reincarnated.
He tracks down the house where Siu Seen said she would be and is surprised to learn is it the home of none other than Siu Lan, his first love. He snatches the newborn from her arms and runs down to the banks of the river. He tells the baby about how he fell out of the Gate and how sad he is that they could not be together as planned. The child's parent soon catch up to him and, to Ning's great shock, he learns that the baby is a boy.
As he stands dazed, Solid Gold, who did go through the reincarnation process and now is a cat, points to the bamboo umbrella that Ning had used to carry Siu Seen when she was a ghost. Ning picks it up, climbs to the top of a nearby bridge and jumps into the river. As soon as he opens the umbrella, Siu Seen appears. She had seen Ning tossed out and had dashed out herself just before the Gate shut.
As they head towards the surface he asks if they should try reincarnation again. She says, "No. How many times does a ghost make a friend?" and that she wants to remain by his side. This is where the film ends.
