801 T.T.S. Airbats
Link: 801 T.T.S. Airbats
801 T.T.S. Airbats Sleek military jets soar, swoop, and loop overhead while and attractive girls fawn over a cute but meek guy; if this sounds like a winning combination to you, then 801 T.T.S. Airbats is your video. Set at a fictional, all-female Japanese Defense Force Squadron, 801 T.T.S. Airbats delivers equal portions of top notch flying action and comedy.

The animation, by anime legend Yuji Moriyama, is crisp and fluid and the quality of the production is high. The story is basic but fun. Don't expect breakthroughs - either in drama or comedy. The creators have chosen to play it right down the middle and they do not deviate off course.

All in all, 801 T.T.S Airbats is an enjoyable, fluffy comedy that hits most of the marks. It won't disappoint but it isn't going to leave a lasting impression either.

Abashiri Family
Link: Abashiri Family
Abashiri Family In a Blade Runner-like future, there exists a family of criminals so feared that even the thieves and police are intimidated at the mere mention of their name...Abashiri.
In this video, we see how they earned their reputation.

Created by the ever prolific Go Nagai, this family has all of his trademarks - sexy girls, deformed and lecherous men, cyborgs, and more. The action comes fast and furious and there are plenty of disturbing scenes. Go Nagai rarely pulls his punches and this is a full 9 rounds of body blows.

The animation is typical of a Go Nagai anime and will please his fans. The story, told in a series of episodes, builds on itself in both plot and intensity. This is not a video for the faint of heart!

Amazing Nurse Nanako
Link: Amazing Nurse Nanako
Amazing Nurse Nanako A beautifully drawn but schizophrenic anime, Amazing Nurse Nanako tries hard to be everything to everyone. It has a "mysterious past" element - like Nadia or Agent Aika; "political machinations" - like Gasaraki or Neon Genesis Evangelion; and a "cute android" - like All Purpose Cat Girl Nuku Nuku or Saber Marionette J; all topped off with the bouncing breasts of Knights of Ramune, Jungle de Ikkoku, or Cutey Honey. It's an okay outing for the older crowd but may leave some feeling guilty or slightly dirty after watching.

The animation by RADIX is smooth, well colored, and one of the better computer colored videos. The character designs by Toshinari Yamashita are fun but they seem to own a great debt to the distinctive (and prolific) Yuji Moriyama. The DVD deserves special mention for an excellent interface design.

Animation Runner Kuromi
Link: Animation Runner Kuromi
Animation Runner Kuromi A lighthearted anime that gives the viewer a look behind the curtain at how anime is made, Animation Runner Kuromi is 40 minutes of laughs and fun.

Featuring Akitaroh Daichi's trademark breezy comic style, the film moves a brisk pace. The director's goal is to entertain, not educate, and he accomplishes that brilliantly. The characters slip fluidly from a "normal" appearance to amoebas and back again and the voice performances keep pace.

Overall, a delightful treat for any self-proclaimed Otaku.

Burn Up Excess
Link: Burn Up Excess
Burn Up Excess Burn Up Excess is the latest installment in the Burn Up saga. What started out as a near future cop drama in Burn Up evolved into a breast-obsessed action/comedy in Burn Up W and finally became fluffy self-effacing comedy in Burn Up Excess.

Burn Up Excess has everything a growing teenage boy needs - guns, car chases, and absurdly proportioned woman bouncing their way through every scene. Team Warrior might not be the most precise special forces group to combat crime but they are certainly the most scantily clothed. But betweeen all the bouncing and ditzness, they do manage to solve the crimes.

The animation is standard fare and the stories are entertaining. Overall, the quality of production is very good. If you liked the Charlie's Angels movies, you going to enjoy Burn Up Excess.

Chobits
Link: Chobits
Chobits Another wonderful fantasty from the talented female collective known as CLAMP, Chobits is sweet, sometimes silly, and always entertaining. Featuring gorgeous animation, eye pleasing character design, and nicely complex story, this is a series worthy of your investment of time and money.

Hideki Motosuwa, your typical prep school student, has just arrived from the family farm and is starting to settle into the foreign world that is Tokyo. He is amazed at the crowds, the noise, and most of all, the Persocoms - walking, talking computers that look like women, dolls or toys, see to be everywhere. In fact, poor, broke Hideki is just about the only person in Tokyo without one.

But that changes on his very first night in the big city when he discovers a Persocom in a trash pile on the way back to his tiny apartment. He carries the unit home and manages to get it running. Now Hideki has a Persocom. Unfortunately, this Persocom comes with more questions than answers. Who built it? How can it run without an OS installed? Could "Chi", as Hideki has named her, be one of the "Chobits" - a Persocom only rumored to exist that can actually learn, evolve, and make its own choices?

Don't Leave Me Alone Daisy
Link: Don't Leave Me Alone Daisy
Don't Leave Me Alone Daisy Ever wondered how the geeky guys find the girl of their dreams and convince her to give them the time of day? We are talking about the nerd's nerd, the boy with the thick glasses, button-down shirt and ever present neckwear. It's with their big, powerful...brains!

Or at least that is what the creators of Don't Leave Me Alone Daisy would like us to believe. Meet Techno, a brilliant but highly disturbing (and definitely disturbed) geek of the highest order. While spying for intruders via his secret underground lab's periscope, Techno encounters the pretty (and thankfully ordinary) schoolgirl Hitomi Matsuzawa. Techno immediately renames her Daisy-chan and declares that she is not only as the love of his life but an extraterrestrial.

What follows is one of the wackiest, funniest, unusual comedies ever to come out of Japan. What makes a perfect "I love you" gift? How about a nuclear missile? Planning that perfect romantic getaway? Have you consider a Russian prison? And that is just the beginning.

Strong animation, inspired storytelling, and over-the-top performances all contribute to the success of this throughly enjoyable video.

Dragon Half
Link: Dragon Half
Dragon Half A fun, slapstick comedy set in the dungeon and dragons world, Dragon Half is a hoot. There is much tongue-in-cheek humor, and the characters are adorable (especially when the animation style quickly slips into super deformed mode). Even the end credits (both music and animation) are amusing and cute.

The animation is fluid, and the backgrounds are slightly better than average. There is some brief feminine nudity, a little bit of blood and some scary looking monsters, so this is not a video for the youngsters (8 and below) but everyone else should have fun.Note: the subtitled version was reviewed. Genshiken
Link: Genshiken
Genshiken Genshiken, like Otaku No Video, Animation Runner Kuromi or Comic Party before it, is an anime for Otaku by Otaku. Think of it as an animated version of Trekkies.

Otaku, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a label with a mixed past. In Japanese, Otaku is actually the honorific form of house - a way of saying "your house" to your boss or teacher. As a title in Japanese, it refers to an obsessed individual; someone so involved in their hobby that they seem never to leave their house. Americans, hearing the description as "a devoted fan" adopted the epithet with pride. Which brings us to why the callout for this title is "The Truth Hurts."

Just like the Trekkies film or the earlier "Otaku No Video," Genshiken holds up a mirror in which the fan can see himself. Creator Shimoku Kio and director Takashi Ikehata have assembled a work that is, while still fiction, also a pretty honest portrait of the Otaku lifestyle. The characters each represent a particular stereotype - whether it is the cosplayer or the gamer - plus there is the observer, a girl who has fallen for one of the club members but can't understand the obsession.

Unlike Animation Runner Kuromi or Comic Party, Genshiken is more about life than goals. There is no huge target - get the anime done on time! - simply just following the Genshiken, the name means "Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture" as they wander from comic conventions to debates about which is better - the manga or anime version of a favorite title.

The characters are nicely drawn, and the overall look is smooth and professional. But, what makes this title a notch better than the rest of field is the emotions of the characters. The Japanese voice cast does an excellent job, and the animators have made these 2D drawings into real people.

If there is an Otaku in your life, this is the video for them.

Hand Maid May
Link: Hand Maid May
Hand Maid May Wouldn't you like your own pretty maid? Someone who would clean the house, cook the meals, make the bed (and maybe even share that bed with you), and even was computer literate? How much would you be willing to pay for that privilege?

Well, for poor and penniless college student Kazuya, that bill comes to $1,450,000 (thanks to the interfering actions of his arch rival, Nanbara).

Now, Kazuya is the master of a 1-foot tall cyborg maid called May and she is much more than a handful. Between jealous girls (both cybernetic and flesh-and-blood), the insane Nanbara, and a ramen-obsessed collection agent, Kazuya's life has been turned inside out and upside down.

Hand Maid May doesn't break any new ground, but it is a pleasant romp. The animation is crisp, and colorful and the characters are broad and humorous. Though the plot is well-worn (you can see how it is all going to end by the beginning of the second episode), this anime is fun and bouncy, just like its fun and bouncy opening.

I'm Gonna Be An Angel! (Tenshi Ni Narumoni) What would you do if you suddenly found yourself "married" to a mysterious girl (who claims to be an angel) and her family (who are all monsters) moved in with you? To find out, just drop in on poor Yuusuke, your typical Japanese high school student who has become the center of a comedy storm.

I'm Gonna Be An Angel could be described as an animated version of the old TV series "The Munsters" but it is much more fun. Filled with delightfully creative monsters and situations, I'm Gonna Be An Angel is as joyful as it's bouncy, smile-inducing theme song. It's a winner.

I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs
Link: I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs
I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs Hibiki Amawa is a recent college graduate with hopes to teach and barely two coins to rub together. But things are looking up as he moves into his new home, a local rooming house. Soon enough, he marches up to the neighborhood school, intent on becoming their new PE teacher. Unfortunately, the school has a "female only" policy regarding teachers.

With his money situation even more desperate and with his dog as collateral (and threatened to be turned into stew), Hibiki decides to prove the school wrong. With a little help from his landlord, Hibiki disguises himself as a women and lands the job.

Now Hibiki has to teach the students while dressed as a woman, pay the landlord, and hide his real identity or the goose..er...dog is cooked.

The animation, by TNK, is crisp and rich. The character design is pleasant and the story, though not Hemingway, is enjoyable. I, My Me! Strawberry Eggs is a delightful romp.

Love Hina Recipe for Love Hina:

2/3 cup - Masion Ikkoku
3 TBsp - Oh My Goddess
1/4 cup (sifted) - Golden Boy
Pinch of Akane Tendo

Mix thoroughly and add 1/2 cup of Tenchi Muyo till all ingredients are blended. Season with standard hapless anime boy to taste. Serve immediately.

Love Hina may be filled with many of the standard elements anime fans has seen over and over again, but it is still an enjoyable series. The situation has plenty of potential and characters are well defined.

This series has only one intent - to entertain - and the production staff has wisely chosen to focus on that pursuit. If you want a deep thinking series that addresses the ills of world, look elsewhere but if you want a series that will allow you forget about those ills and will keeping you laughing out loud from beginning to end, you have found your video.

Maburaho
Link: Maburaho
Maburaho You knew it was inevitable. Anime producers and manga artist are keenly attuned to what is popular and have the skills to run with what is hot. And that has brought us Maburaho.

Fusing the Harry Potter theme of the "destined teen wizard" with the stock anime harem scenario, creator Toshihiko Tsukiji has given us tale where the hero, Kazuki, is pursued not for his magical abilities but those of the children he will father - someday. Hogwarts is now "Aoi Academy" and instead of Cho, Ginny and Hermione, we get Yuna, Kuriko and Rin. But these gals are more interested making magic with Kazuki than learning magic. The best way to sum up Maburaho is to think of it as Love Hina Reversed. When the male hero finds himself in a compromising position, he is pounced up by the eager female instead being belted into the lower atmosphere. (Maburaho is also very similar to Ken Akamatsu's, creator of Love Hina, Negima!)

The art is brightly colored and smoothly animated, as to be expected from prolific J.C. Staff. The main characters are given just enough to make them individuals but the supporting cast is pretty much carbon copy stock. Director Shinichiro Kimura, (Burn Up Excess, Hand Maid May, Popotan) knows his way around these waters and has no reservations (or concerns about gravity) when it comes to the female bust. Let's just say that many wands will be at attention while watching Maburaho.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
Link: Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi When you are 12, summer can seem to last forever. And change is scary. Arumi and Sasshi, two Osaka kids living in Abeno are encountering both.

The shopping arcade where their families live and work is slowly dying, and Arumi's family is moving away to Hokkaido. This leaves Sasshi with a double lost; his best friend Arumi and his precious collection of baseball cards and vending machine toys (tossed out when his family moved to a new smaller condo while he was away at camp). But everything changes when they accidently discover a magical world hidden in the shopping arcade.

Now they are lost in a crazy anime hall of mirrors, where each distorted version of the shopping arcade seems weirder than the last. Who is the large chested red-headed woman that keeps popping up? Will they ever find a being that can perform the return to reality ceremony properly? Just how depraved is a teenage boy's mind? Only time and a series of outlandish adventures will tell.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi is another hit from Gainax (Neon Genesis Evangelion, His and Her Circumstances, Mahoromatic Automatic Maiden, Otaku No Video). This time around they offer a comedy spoofing anime genres.

Much like Excel Saga and Otaku No Video (one of Gainax's first films), it is a wry comment on anime and the culture of anime. The two leads are likable and funny and the look of the series is sophisticated - just right for the concept. There are many inside jokes, so the level of enjoyment will probably be in proportion to the viewer's anime knowledge. But, even if they are anime newbies, this fish out of water story should still bring in the laughs.

Mao-chan
Link: Mao-chan
Mao-chan Cute, silly, and full of can-do spirit. It's the textbook description of a second-grade girl and of Mao-chan, the latest effort from creator Ken Akamatsu and Production I.G, the team behind the hilarious and popular Love Hina. In many ways, Mao-chan could be considered an alternate universe version of Love Hina.

Wacky hijinks and off-the-wall characters populate the world of Mao-chan, just as they do in Love Hina and some of Hina's characters even appear in Mao-chan, though renamed. Driving all of this craziness is a (somewhat) threatening invasion of adorable cute aliens. And to counter these attacks, the proud grandfathers that head Japan's Ground, Air and Sea Self Defense forces have chosen to draft their second grade granddaughters. In a wry commentary on warfare in this modern age, Akamatsu has the crafty old men intentional choosing their impossibly cute granddaughters for the task mainly to win the hearts of the people and curry political favor rather than for their ability to accomplish the task. It's very funny and, sadly, probably true.

The animation is crisp and brightly colored. There are nice touches of 3D computer graphics integrated in as the military hardware and, overall, it is very lovely to look at. The music is also right on target, capturing the mood perfectly. Especially notable are the opening and closing themes; they are great fun.

Ranma 1/2: Season 1
Link: Ranma 1/2: Season 1
Ranma 1/2: Season 1 A long running series based on the enormously popular manga of the same name by superstar creator Rumiko Takahashi, Ranma 1/2 is a rare combination of all the right elements.

Ranma succeeds because its characters are so believable and likable even though they do impossible things. If one was to actually encounter a young man who had numerous fiancees, lived for free with a family that is not his own and could perform amazing feats of martial arts, you would refuse to believe him yet viewers of Ranma accept these traits in their hero with nary a blink of the eye. They don't even balk at the notion that there could be a place in China that transforms people who are unlucky enough to fall in.

Followers of Ranma accept these fantasies for the same reasons that nobody questions how rabbits, ducks and pigs could talk and walk like people in the classic Warners Bros. cartoons.Takahashi's characters are both broad caricatures and richly complex. We laugh at their antics and foibles but still worry about if Ranma and Akane will ever truly express their feelings for one another. This ability is extremely rare and Takahashi has a real gift.

The stories are always entertaining and sometimes even moving and the artwork is crisp and well-drawn. Each and every aspect of the production (from incidental music to voice acting) as been thought out.In summary, Ranma 1/2 is a nearly perfect series and the preeminent example of the genre.

Ranma 1/2: Season 2 - Anything Goes Martial Arts A long running series based on the enormously popular manga of the same name by superstar creator Rumiko Takahashi, Ranma 1/2 is a rare combination of all the right elements.Ranma succeeds because its characters are so believable and likable even though they do impossible things.

Ranma 1/2: Season 7 - Ranma Forever
Link: Ranma 1/2: Season 7 - Ranma Forever
Ranma 1/2: Season 7 - Ranma Forever The seventh season of the long-running and popular Ranma 1/2 leaves the story arc concept on the drawing table and focuses on situational comedy instead. Each episode is a self-contained comic jewel featuring the now familiar cast of this series.

The artwork, which has proven to be uneven over the run of Ranma, improves slightly though it still varies in quality from episode to episode. The stories are pretty much lifted straight from Rumiko Takahashi's manga, which is about as good a source as you can find, but no longer feature the unity and "connectedness" that the first and second seasons did.

The arrival of Ranma on DVD brings mixed blessings as well. Though buyers now no longer have to decide between English dubbed or subtitled versions (as both are supplied on the same disc) and they receive three episodes on each volume (versus the two they were given on VHS), Viz skimps on additional content for the DVD - there are no previews and the only "extras" are a handful of slides listing cast and crew credits. Given the popularity of Ranma, it would have been nice if Viz could have included more features on the disc.

But in the end, Ranma 1/2 is about Ranma, Akane, and all the other wacky denizens of Nerima and those who have experienced their hijinks just can't help but tune in for more of their (mis)adventures. They won't be disappointed with season seven.

Sailor Victory
Link: Sailor Victory
Sailor Victory Sailor Victory is a fun-filled romp through the genres of fighting robot teams and sailor-suited heroines. These sailors are normal girls leading normal lives until danger threatens their town. Then they trade their mild-mannered identities for their sailor suits and ninja robots and race out to defend the innocent.

Filled with virtually all of the stereotypes found in anime, Sailor Victory takes no prisoners when it comes to satirizing the well-worn concept of hidden identity fighting teams. The characters seem to revel in their stereotypical roles and often break the fourth wall to comment, somewhat self-serving, on the coolness of whatever they just saw. Sailor Victory further exploits it by adding in strong character designs, better than average production design and a laugh-out-loud script. All together, this adds up to 60 minutes of pure joy that leaves you wishing for more.

The Adventures of Mini-Goddess
Link: The Adventures of Mini-Goddess
The Adventures of Mini-Goddess Fans of Kosuke Fujishima's Oh My Goddess! (also known as Ah My Goddess) will immediately recognize the names Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld but for those not familiar with the three live-in goddess, The Adventures of Mini-Goddess is a fine way to meet them. The premise is simple and, unlike most anime seen in America, this is not a series of 30 minutes episodes but a collection of short, 8 minute sketches. Also, the three lead characters are presented in a "super-deformed" style - a format in which the characters are drawn with adult heads on childlike bodies and other exaggerated features - along with their friend, Gan, a talking rat.

But it all works. Just like the classic Bugs Bunny cartoons, The Adventures of Mini-Goddess conjures up magic from a great cast of characters and good, clean fun. This is a collection of laughs and smiles for everyone.
