Aquarian Age: Sign for Evolution
Link: Aquarian Age: Sign for Evolution
Aquarian Age: Sign for Evolution Aquarian Age: Sign for Evolution is an enormous thing to grasp. Based on a popular but complex trading card game created by Broccoli (better known for the cute and silly DiGi Charat), Aquarian Age follows the story of aspiring pop star Kyouta and his girlfriend, Yoriko. Unbeknownst to Kyouta, he is at the middle of an ages-old conflict between 5 factions. Even more startling is that Yoriko is destined to be the leader of one of the warring parties, though she has so far refused to assume the role.

Deftly balancing the need to introduce the game and its complex rules with the requirement of creating an engaging and entertaining anime, director Yoshimitsu Ohashi unfolds the tale in a seductive, slow fashion. At times, it may seem to be going nowhere and then, bam, a revelation or surprise pops up. This is all ably assisted by clean, crisp letterboxed animation by the renown Madhouse.

If you are a fan of magic battles, Japanese pop or an excellent mystery, then Aquarian Age is for you.

Gestalt
Link: Gestalt
Gestalt Gestalt is nearly perfect - as a formulaic anime. It has all of the right parts but somehow they never quite add up to greatness. The video introduces us to a number of likable characters and sets up a plausible (for this genre of anime) story.

Unfortunately, we have heard this tale before. Everyone know that the hero and the heroine are going to solve the mystery and that they are never really in danger of losing the big fight. It is this lack of tension that is Gestalt's Achilles heel.

But the animation, one of the earliest attempts at an all-digital anime (meaning coloring and special effects done digitally) is crisp and clean. The character designs is nicely done as well. The music, though, is forgettable.Gestalt has it moments but in the long run, the Darwinian process of survival of the fittest for the anime world allowed wisely lets this one go extinct.

Ruin Explorers
Link: Ruin Explorers
Ruin Explorers A sucessful blending of comedy and the standard "dungeons and dragons" plot. The animation is better than average and the plot, though compressed, moves smoothly. An interesting choice was to have a French classical chamber orchestra provide the background music; it adds an Indiana Jones-like atmosphere to the film. Overall, the animation remains strong and the story is one of the better of the D&D anime genre. Well worth a watching.

Slayers
Link: Slayers
Slayers A fun blend of screwball comedy and sword & sorcery action, Slayers is the long running, always funny anime hit.The style of Slayers is distinctive, with animation that is middle of the pack but full of energy. The principal characters (Lina Inverse, Gourry and the rest) are sharply drawn and well defined. The battle sequences are always entertaining and full of spectacular explosions but, being a comedic adventure, tend to result in dropped pants, charred hair or someone sent flying.

Equally distinctive is the American voice of Lina, as voiced by Lisa Ortiz. Her voice is Lina in the same way that Nancy Cartwright's is Bart Simpson. Slayers is a predictable series (in the same way a Loony Tunes cartoon is predictable) and that is where its greatest weakness lies. After watching the first series, you find yourselves wondering why Lina just doesn't let loose with a might blast and get it over with. But, all in all, Slayers is an enjoyable series that you will find yourselves gleefully watching over and over, just like those old Loony Tunes.
