Agent Aika
Link: Agent Aika
Agent Aika An rollicking adventure set in a devastated future Earth, Agent Aika is a crisply drawn anime that delivers plenty of adult level entertainment. Aika has an okay story revolving around a mad scientist, a mysterious ability and a secret past with elements (and values) similar to those you would find in a 60's era James Bond flick. The only disappointing part is the over reliance on T&A shots. Otherwise, good fun.

Aika is a salvenger - a person who makes her living by diving down to the suken city of Tokyo to recover items for clients. Along Rion and her father, the threesome make enough to survive on. But then one day, they find themselves drawn into a greater mystery. Soon they are tangled up in a plot to conquer the world and Aika's mysterious past and abilities may be the only thing that can prevent the coming armengeddon.

Crisp, fluid, animation and eye-pleaseing character designs are two of the standout features of this anime. Also notable is the animators fascination with women's underpants - drinking games exist solely based on the number of "panty shots" in each frame of these videos. Younger viewers and their guardians are warned.

Cleopatra DC
Link: Cleopatra DC
Cleopatra DC Cleopatra DC is classic adventure. Filled with scheming bad guys, prosthetically equippped henchmen, and exotic locales, it is in the same vein as the James Bond tales. It also has much in common with the later Angel Links, in that the heroine is an immensely wealthy (and well endowed) 16 year girl with amazing abilities.

The animation is pleasant, though with this being a collection of OAVs from the late 80s and early 90s, they are not in the same league as the more recent digital animation efforts. The characters are fun and the way that the cast interacts with each other is enjoyable. This is also a series that know not to take itself too seriously and there are plenty of humorous moments. Cleopatra DC is fun, popcorn-munching action for everyone.

Dangaizer 3
Link: Dangaizer 3
Dangaizer 3 An action packed thiller from the gifted Masami Obari, Dangaizer 3 delivers more than you are ready to handle. Filled with lush animation, amazing battle sequence, and just the right amount of humor, this is a series that is sure to please any action fan.

Hina is a young woman who has a gift for fighting games. In the arena, she can not be defeated. But everything changes the day that she finds herself facing her most dangerous battle. Suddenly, she is thrust in a secret world, lurking just behind the facade of everyday life, where the battle over the very fate of man has waged for more than 5,000 years. And it turns out that Hina is destined to be one of it's warriors. Will Hina be able to take her game to the next level?

There is a generous amount of nude female "body flashing", mainly in during the "power up" transformation, so it is wise to heed the 16+ rating for the young ones.

Full Metal Alchemist
Link: Full Metal Alchemist
Full Metal Alchemist Full Metal Alchemist is another quest show in the vein of Orphen, Fushigi-Yugi or Arc the Lad. Brothers Edward and Al, powerful Alchemists, nearly died when they attempted a forbidden transmutation in an effort to revive their dead mother and paid a terrible price. Now they travel the land, battling evil-doers and searching for the artifacts that might cure them.

The animation is crisp and clean, as to be expected from BONES. The background music is the vaguely classical stuff you expect in this adventure-driven type of anime and suits it well. The characters are well conceived and have enough depth to them to keep you interested.

But, as far as being the standout anime that some have proclaimed, that claim is not so apparent. Unlike other richly engaging quests, such as The Twelve Kingdoms or The Vision of Escaflowne, there really isn't a sense of "big mission" in Full Metal Alchemist. Each episode has a villain-du-jour and the overall quest is quite clear. Perhaps down the pike, things get more involving but for now it remains a solid middle of the pack adventure.

Full Metal Panic
Link: Full Metal Panic
Full Metal Panic Kaname is a bright, bubbly schoolgirl. She has long, pretty hair, beautiful eyes, and a winning smile. And the most fearsome, nastiest terrorists in the world want her - badly. Why? Well, that's why you have to watch. But, between gun-toting students, super-secret submarines, and Kaname's hair-trigger anger, the terrorist have their work cut out for them.

Full Metal Panic is another hit from Gonzo, the studio behind other high-energy series such as Gate Keepers, Vandread, and Real Bout High School. As with those previous outings, Gonzo has deftly blended superb action with entertaining comedy. One moment you are on the edge of your seat feeling every blow and gunshot and then are rolling with laughter the next. It's their gift and Full Metal Panic is the highest example of it.

The quality of the animation is amazing. Rich colors, crisp drawing and an immersive sound experience all combine to suck the viewer into its world. A worthy addition to any anime, action, or comedy fans must see list.

Gate Keepers
Link: Gate Keepers
Gate Keepers It's 1969 and Japan is going through difficult growing pains. Yes, the recovery from WWII is well underway and with it, a certain way of life is disappearing but these pains are of a different sort. The sort that happens when Invaders transform your citizens into mindless killer androids and your only hope rests with a handful of special teenagers.

Gate Keepers is a delightful series that combines warm sentimentality with James Bondsian Sci-Fi. It follows the trials and adventures of a group of Japanese teenagers with the rare ability to access other dimensions, known as "Gates", and use those powers to combat "Super Science Invaders." Each student's power is keyed to their personality and, being teenagers, getting them to work smoothly together is a bit of the old "herding cats" scenario. But, their hearts are pure and their determination is true, which makes them a joy to watch.

Gonzo and Executive Director Junichi Sato lavish much care on this work. The backgrounds are beautifully painted and the animation is drawn wonderfully. The entire team must have spent many fun hours inventing all of the nifty Q-worthy transforming cars, planes and buildings and "sliding down the pole to the secret base" routines.

This is a series that will please a broad range of anime fans. There are moments of intense action and moments of intense comedy. The story is interesting and every detail has been sweated. Simply a solid, enjoyable watch.

Gravion Zwei
Link: Gravion Zwei
Gravion Zwei In fancy five-star restaurants they sometimes take the foods that your mother and doctor tell you avoid, add lots of rare and unique ingredients and serve it up as something very special - like a hamburger made from Filet Mignon and Foie Gras. It isn't any healthier for you but the high quality and price somehow justify the indulgence.

Gravion Zwei is just that sort of guilty pleasure.

This show is one where the satire is either ingeniously sublime or unintentional. All the required elements of a traditional giant robot show are present - giant robot assembled from a team of heros in separate vehicles, a monster that is just a variation of the previous monster, cute girls, handsome guys and, of course, lots of shouting of attack moves. But director/creator Masami Obari and animation studio Gonzo have "kicked it up a notch."

There aren't just one or two cute girls - there is an entire castle full of them whose chests defy all laws of physics and biology. There is the mystery of the missing sister, but the team seem to remember about that task only when it is convenient for them. And, for a force entrusted with defending the world from certain doom, they spend a heck of a lot time in various states of undress or out goofing off at hot springs, picnics and more.

But why quibble over the obvious? Just like that $60 gourmet hamburger, this is a gluttonous treat; not a bowl of wheat germ. The producers know who their audience is and what they are really interested in, so why invest time in creating a complex rich storyline when a few more curvy lines is what the fans desire? If that defines your ideal anime, then Gravion Zwei is just perfect for you.

Grenadier: The Beautiful Warrior
Link: Grenadier: The Beautiful Warrior
Grenadier: The Beautiful Warrior Lately, Japanese history has been going through a fair bit of renovation. Samurai Gun has gun-toting samurais. Moeyo Ken has 14th century Japanese racing around in cars and even Gasaraki posits that the ancient Japanese had large robot suits handy.

So, is it stretching it a bit too far to propose that during Japan's Warring States period that there was an overly-buxom blond haired woman running around sharp-shooting her way through difficulties? Not for the creators of Grenadier: The Beautiful Warrior it is not.

This anime is firmly in the "don't ask, just accept" category. The woman has a revolver and can reload it from a seemingly endless supply of bullets buried in her ample cleavage. Don't ask where she got the gun nor how she does the reload trick, just enjoy the moment are the implied instructions. And if you follow that advice, you will, if you are into that type of anime, be entertained. Grenadier does not break any new boundaries (except possibly bust size) and the situation is quickly setup.

The animation is clean and well colored. The rest of the package is solid but middle of the pack. I doubt that there will be many fan sites dedicated to this series. But if this is what you consider to be "light, bouncy fun", you won't be disappointed.

Gunsmith Cats
Link: Gunsmith Cats
Gunsmith Cats A rollicking adventure set in Chicago and based on the very popular manga of the same name (by Kenichi Sonoda), Gunsmith Cats is a blast. It is as close to good old-fashioned American (Rockford Files, Starsky and Hutch, etc.) crime action show as you are going to find in anime.

The characters have been drawn very faithfully to Sonoda-san's designs and the cars and guns have received the same loving attention as well. The animators went to great lengths (including traveling to Chicago to get a sense of the city, interviewing actual US policemen, shooting the guns, and driving the cars) to make the action seem as real as possible. The music also deserves special recognition as it is outstanding. All-in-all, this is one that will please almost everyone.

Iczelion
Link: Iczelion
Iczelion This is latest installment in the Iczer saga. Iczer 1, first released in Japan in 1985, was both an early adopter of the new OAV format and the "babes in armor" style - referring to girls who wear skintight battle suits with large blades, fins, wings, etc. attached.

Often, to get into the tight fitting suits, it involves a transformation sequence in which the clothes the heroine was wearing are torn, spun off or simply vanishing, leaving the poor girl naked for a brief moment until the new armor literally welds itself to the warrior.

In Iczerlion, Earth is once again threatened. It is up to young Nagisa Kai, a high school girl who dreams of becoming a pro wrestler, to don the battle suit and a defeat the evil enemies.

She does have help in the form of three other Iczelions warriors and the video spends an inordinately long time with Nagisa refusing to accept her duty before finally reaching the climactic battle. Not a video of the impatient!

Ikki Tousen
Link: Ikki Tousen
Ikki Tousen Ikki Tousen is a controversial series. It graphically depicts teenage boys and girls brutally assaulting one another and plays very loose with nudity and sexual imagery. And the manga it is based on was successfully prosecuted for plagiarism in Japan.

Ikki Tousen tells the tale of Hakufu Sonsaku, a ditzy blonde whose bust size is far greater than her IQ. She attends one of the 7 high schools of the Kanto region that are locked in a 1,800 year old battle. It is an eternal war between legendary warriors who are constantly reincarnated as hot high schoolers to continue their fight. Adding to the titillation is the fact that some previously male warriors are now curvaceous ladies and vice versa. And no one is quite sure who was who.

J.C. Staff, usually known for less racy matter, nary misses a moment to flash a panty or breast. The fight sequences, like in the manga, tend to focus on innuendo instead of the punches and there is plenty of innuendo. The best description for this series is "Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball - The High School Rumble Edition."

Maze: Mega Burst Space Another wild and crazy outing from the fertile minds behind Slayers Try and Photon, Maze: Mega Burst Space (The Series) is a odd but entertaining anime. Maze: The OAV The OAV of the popular Maze the Mega-Burst Space series is an uneven effort. The video assumes that the viewer is already familiar with both the characters and their unique abilities and does little to provide background or context. Also, even though it is a satire, Maze careens between being subtle to crude.

The premise of Maze has much promise but unfortunately it is hard to warm up to this OAV. Add the overabundance of naked bodies and nipple shots and you have a lackluster video.

Meltylancer: The Animation
Link: Meltylancer: The Animation
Meltylancer: The Animation Based on a popular Playstation game, Meltylancer: The Animation is fun mix of unique characters, action, comedy, and mystery. The story starts "midstream" with the Meltylancer team scattered across the universe but viewers unfamiliar with the game and it's backstory are quickly brought up to speed over the three episodes in the first DVD volume. The characters are distinct enough that they can be easily recognized and indentified and the story builds rapidly.

The animation, by GONZO, is crisp and clean. Though it does not have that "shiny 3D" look that many of GONZO's other efforts, such as Vandread or Blue Submarine No. 6, has, the camera and effects work is state of the art.

All in all, this is a fun, action-packed anime with just enough comedy and mystery to make everyone happy.

Nazca An interesting take on the age old story of Romeo and Juliet, this tale involves Japanese teenagers who are the reincarnated souls of Inca warriors or priests. A beautiful color palette and very striking opening theme (a variation on the Well Tempered Clavier Fugue by J.S. Bach by the Eccentric Opera) are the standouts in this very good anime.BonusBe sure to check the "extra" section of the DVD for a satirical mini-manga of Nazca. Neo Ranga
Link: Neo Ranga
Neo Ranga An intriguing series that challenges the viewer on many fronts, Neo Ranga breaks the mold.

Originally presented as part of an anime anthology program, Neo Ranga is comprised of a series of 15 minute episodes. To further "stir the pot", Neo Ranga does not start at the beginning of it's story. Instead, it jumps back and forth along it's timeline, aided by the voiceover narration of an unidentified man. Combined with high production values, strong direction and design, and a powerful soundtrack, Neo Ranga grabs the viewer and doesn't let go.

Photon
Link: Photon
Photon A new series from the writer and the character designer of Tenchi Muyo, Photon is disappointing. This is due to the combination of the large amount of "recycled" material from the Tenchi series and the strange (and rather lackluster) performances of the American voice actors.

The animation is in the same class as the Tenchi Muyo series (standard AIC stuff) and is okay. But it is very difficult to get pass the fact that there is so much Tenchi-styled material in this video. Couldn't they have at least come up with a different ship design? If you like Tenchi Muyo and are suffering from withdrawal then you will enjoy this video. Otherwise, this is a single watch and toss for most everyone else.

Pilot Candidate
Link: Pilot Candidate
Pilot Candidate Another anime cut from the same cloth as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Dual and Martian Successor Nadesico, Pilot Candidate holds its own but is also firmly in the middle of a crowded anime pack.

In Pilot Candidate, the last human planet is threatened by a mysterious alien enemy called "Victim." Only five giant robots, called "Goddesses", are capable of defeating the huge Victim entities. Each Goddess has a single pilot who has a symbiotic relationship with the machine. The pilot commands the craft via small pods floating near their heads that transmit their thoughts to the ship.

Pilot Candidate's characters seem familiar, mainly because they either look or act characters found in other series. The hero could be easily mistaken for Akito from Martian Successor Nadesico and the battle armor looks like it came from the same factory that made the units for Dual.Even the plot feels more like a variation on well-known themes than something original.

But don't let all the similarities fool you. Just as McDonald's and Burger King both serve hamburgers, there is enough difference between Pilot Candidate and it's competition to make it worth watching. Perhaps Pilot Candidate will develop into a genre-defining anime or remain a simple but entertaining yarn. Either way, here's to looking forward to the ride.

Read or Die: The TV (R.O.D The TV)
Link: Read or Die: The TV (R.O.D The TV)
Read or Die: The TV (R.O.D The TV) In 2001, 3 episodes following the adventures of Yomiko Readman and her British Library Special Operations appeared and shook up the anime world. A thrilling yarn of famous figures gone bad, amazing powers and humanity's fate hanging by a thread, it garnered numerous praise and devoted fans. Three long years later, the cry for more was answered. But this time, three sisters possessed the paper manipulating abilities and Ms. Readman was still missing. Welcome to Read Or Die: The TV.

Director Kouji Masunari brought back most of the team behind the initial anime. The big change, in addition to three heroines, was the replacement of Studio Deen with J.C. Staff for the animation duties. Both studios have done themselves proud with the work they did for this franchise. Hardcore Otaku can have late night debates to which one is the better.

In creating R.O.D.: The TV, the team posited "What if we combined 'Charlie's Angels' with cat-girls?" The result was the three sister heroines (though they do not have cat ears or tails). What they do have are impressive paper manipulation skills, unique personalities and endless watchability. The entire project reeks of sophistication and devotion. Action is smooth and well animated, the direction is taunt and the soundtrack perfect. But the best treat is that it carries through all 7 volumes.

R.O.D.: The TV is worthy successor to Read Or Die. It continues the story without repeating itself, introduces new characters that we care about and does it all with the same polish and style as its predecessor. And that is the epitome of a job done right.

Samurai Girl Real Bout High School
Link: Samurai Girl Real Bout High School
Samurai Girl Real Bout High School At Daimon High School, P.E. is the most important class. It's so important, bouts between students are broadcasted, with running commentary, throughout the school. These bouts are called "K-Fights" and they are very important indeed.

The champion is a fetching young lady with fiery red hair and a hot sword to match. Her name is Ryoko and her aspiration is to be a samurai. The only obstacles are a full-of-himself fighter named Shizuma Kusanagi, a jealous upperclassmate and her duties as the Demon Lord of Yenen. It's a hard challenge to become a samurai when you keep getting swept away to fight demon beasts.

Samurai Girl Real Bout High School is a bit of a smorgasbord in the realm of fighting anime. There's plenty of hand to hand and sword to sword action but there is also heaping helpings of mystical powers, mythical beasts and uproarious comedy. Which is all to be expected from a story that gently mocks both fighting mangas and combat video games.

Luckily, Gonzo, a studio with a fine reputation for action and comedy, has deftly combined both. Unlike similar series such as Ikki Tousen or Tenjho Tenge, there is less blood and skin but you don't feel cheated. The artwork is nicely done and the pace is good. All in all, a fun series to enjoy.

Spriggan
Link: Spriggan
Spriggan Ever since 1988, when Akira first took Japan and the world by storm, people have been searching for its successor. Whether Spriggan is that film depends on what aspects of Akira you valued most. If Akira's combination of science-fiction fantasy and action-adventure are what you believe made that film great, then Spriggan will please you. If, on the other hand, you are more drawn to deep philosophical questions like those presented by Akira, the Matrix trilogy or Neon Genesis Evangelion, then you may find Spriggan not so entertaining.

Based on a manga by Hiroshi Takashige and Ryoji Minagawa, Spriggan is filled with non-stop action, fantastic battle sequences and thrilling moments. The movie has a similar look and feel to Akira, which may be due to Akira's creator's, Katsuhiro Otomo, involvement as general supervisor. The artwork by Studio 4C (The Matrix Animations, Memories) is detailed and easy on the eyes. Music, pacing and the plot are all fast, rich and engaging.

Spriggan is 90 minutes of electrifying animation guaranteed to leave any anime fan happy.

Stratos 4
Link: Stratos 4
Stratos 4 Pop Quiz...Clear your desks and take out a clean sheet of paper. Please mark your answers by choosing only one option in this multiple choice test.

**********

#1. Earth is threatened by a shower of massive comets. If one hits the planet, humans go the way of the dinosaurs. Which solution do you choose?

A. Recruit a bunch of very sexy teenage girls, train them to fly huge space shuttles and fighters, squeeze them into skin-tight suits and then send them up into space to shoot the down the comets while piloting from an all-fours position.

B. Gather all of the top space agencies and plan a systematic solution that addresses the problem rationally.

C. Don't worry. Everything comes to end sometime.

**********

#2. The entire existence of the human race depends on the abilities of your team to defend Earth from comets. So when your crew is not on standby, they should:

A. Review previous encounters so that they can improve their responses in the future.

B. Work at a local restaurant as waitresses and delivery staff in skin tight, very short Chinese dresses.

C. Practice in the simulators and gym to improve their skills.

**********

#3. Who would you choose as your pilot to save the Earth?

A. A veteran test pilot.

B. An all-powerful Artificial Intelligence computer.

C. A daydreaming, insecure but voluptuous green-haired girl.

**********

If your answers were "A", "B", "C"... Congratulations! You have passed the final exam and are now assigned the position of Commander of the Stratos 4 force. Please meet your girls at the base, unless it is lunch, dinner, or after hours, when you may find them working at a local restaurant, soaking in the bath or laying around in their underwear. Remember, Earth is relying on you and your team to save us all. Good Luck!

Another offering from the studio and team behind the pantyfests know as Agent Aika and Najica Blitz Tactics, Stratos 4 is a mishmash of fan service, teen angst and fighter plane action. The drawing is crisp and colorful but does not have the same snap and pop as the previously mentioned series. It all feels like it is stuck in second gear. The only thing new here is the names of the leads; otherwise it is all situations and images that we have seen in many other shows.

Tenchi The Movie 2
Link: Tenchi The Movie 2
Tenchi The Movie 2 The second of three Tenchi movies, The Daughter of Darkness is a solid production. It has all of the zany high-jinks, love quarrels and action that fans of the series expect. It also gives more insight into the lives (and relationships) of the popular characters, though in true Tenchi fashion, nothing is openly explained, confirmed or resolved.

The animation is top notch and the production values on the DVD that was reviewed were superb. The English voice acting also deserves recognition for its quality. All in all, an entertaining and well produced film.

Tenjho Tenge
Link: Tenjho Tenge
Tenjho Tenge "Those who do not heed history are doomed to repeat it." is an oft-used saying to remind people of the importance of learning from the past. In Tenjho Tenge, those of history are doomed to become hard-bodied boys and buxom girls as they continue their eternal struggle.

This raucous anime follows the tale of the Natsume sisters, well endowed with womanly assets and martial arts skills, and Souichiro, a young man with a chip on his shoulder and a fierce spirit in his heart. Together, they form the core of the Juuken Club, one of many combat teams at their unusual high school. Through a Ranma-esque like incident, Souichiro also becomes the unwilling betrothed of Aya, the younger, brown-haired sister with a dark secret. Her older sister, Maya, who can appear as a child at will, is the team leader.

Tenjho Tenge combines fantasy history with martial arts to create a fighting anime that is both sexy and action-packed. Drawn by Mad House, famous for producing Ninja Scroll, the fists fly and the kicks strike with intensity and fury. The series moves at a brisk pace and develops nicely, just like the manga it is based on.

If you are a fan of martial arts films or anime, you won't be disappointed by Tenjho Tenge.

The Cat Returns
Link: The Cat Returns
The Cat Returns Based on a story by Hayao Miyazaki, this is a delightful and enchanting tale about a young teenage girl, Haru, who has to find herself after she is swept up in an Alice in Wonderland like adventure. Like almost all of Miyazaki's films (though he did not direct this movie), there is magic (Haru is transformed into a cat-girl at one point), high adventure and a spirit-lifting story about making that sometimes difficult transition from child to adult.

All in all, this is a sweet and wonderful film. Some will grouse at the animation quality, which though not on the level of Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke, it is quite lovely. More likely is that this will become a favorite film of many children and the young at heart.

The Girl From Phantasia

The Girl From Phantasia This is another film that could be classified as "Oh My Goddess lite". Three magic-using girls arrive from a strange place and do not possess a good grasp of how things work in our world. Toss in a hapless young man and a suspicious girlfriend and you have The Girl from Phantasia.

This anime, based on a manga by Akane Nagano, is simple and sweet. There is a little titillation but nary a bare body to be seen, which tends to be quite rare in animes of this genre. The story is decent but leaves much hanging (it is a good guess that the original intent was for The Girl from Phantasia to become a series). Overall, The Girl from Phantasia is a charming video that most folk will be happy to watch at least once.

The Vision of Escaflowne "Was it all just a dream? Or a vision? No, it all really happened, all right. It all began on that day I asked the tarot cards if I'd find love." With those few words, one of the greatest anime series ever made begins.

The Vision of Escaflowne is an amazing achievement. A story of destiny and love set in a world of science and magic, it is highly entertaining. Featuring the talents of the creators of Macross and Gundam, it is filled with action, intrigue and incredible imagination. The score alone is the best since Geinoh Yamashirogumi's work on Akira. It is a must for any anime fan.

The Vision of Escaflowne is filled with stunning animation, incredible design and backgrounds and moves at a breathless pace. The story is so rich viewers can watch it multiple times and find something new each time. The Vision of Esacflowne is a truly rewarding experience.

Z Mind Z Mind is a chic retro giant robo show that deftly balances humor, action, and intrigue. The show uses the basic structure of the giant robo show - one evil organization sending monster after monster, transformation sequences, and the shouting out of attack names - but gives them all a modern twist.
