Full Metal Panic
Link: Full Metal Panic
Full Metal Panic Kaname is a bright, bubbly schoolgirl. She has long, pretty hair, beautiful eyes, and a winning smile. And the most fearsome, nastiest terrorists in the world want her - badly. Why? Well, that's why you have to watch. But, between gun-toting students, super-secret submarines, and Kaname's hair-trigger anger, the terrorist have their work cut out for them.

Full Metal Panic is another hit from Gonzo, the studio behind other high-energy series such as Gate Keepers, Vandread, and Real Bout High School. As with those previous outings, Gonzo has deftly blended superb action with entertaining comedy. One moment you are on the edge of your seat feeling every blow and gunshot and then are rolling with laughter the next. It's their gift and Full Metal Panic is the highest example of it.

The quality of the animation is amazing. Rich colors, crisp drawing and an immersive sound experience all combine to suck the viewer into its world. A worthy addition to any anime, action, or comedy fans must see list.

Gunsmith Cats
Link: Gunsmith Cats
Gunsmith Cats A rollicking adventure set in Chicago and based on the very popular manga of the same name (by Kenichi Sonoda), Gunsmith Cats is a blast. It is as close to good old-fashioned American (Rockford Files, Starsky and Hutch, etc.) crime action show as you are going to find in anime.

The characters have been drawn very faithfully to Sonoda-san's designs and the cars and guns have received the same loving attention as well. The animators went to great lengths (including traveling to Chicago to get a sense of the city, interviewing actual US policemen, shooting the guns, and driving the cars) to make the action seem as real as possible. The music also deserves special recognition as it is outstanding. All-in-all, this is one that will please almost everyone.

Meltylancer: The Animation
Link: Meltylancer: The Animation
Meltylancer: The Animation Based on a popular Playstation game, Meltylancer: The Animation is fun mix of unique characters, action, comedy, and mystery. The story starts "midstream" with the Meltylancer team scattered across the universe but viewers unfamiliar with the game and it's backstory are quickly brought up to speed over the three episodes in the first DVD volume. The characters are distinct enough that they can be easily recognized and indentified and the story builds rapidly.

The animation, by GONZO, is crisp and clean. Though it does not have that "shiny 3D" look that many of GONZO's other efforts, such as Vandread or Blue Submarine No. 6, has, the camera and effects work is state of the art.

All in all, this is a fun, action-packed anime with just enough comedy and mystery to make everyone happy.

Nazca
Link: Nazca
Nazca An interesting take on the age old story of Romeo and Juliet, this tale involves Japanese teenagers who are the reincarnated souls of Inca warriors or priests. A beautiful color palette and very striking opening theme (a variation on the Well Tempered Clavier Fugue by J.S. Bach by the Eccentric Opera) are the standouts in this very good anime.BonusBe sure to check the "extra" section of the DVD for a satirical mini-manga of Nazca. It is good to see that the team behind Nazca is not above spoofing their own.

Read or Die: The TV (R.O.D The TV)
Link: Read or Die: The TV (R.O.D The TV)
Read or Die: The TV (R.O.D The TV) In 2001, 3 episodes following the adventures of Yomiko Readman and her British Library Special Operations appeared and shook up the anime world. A thrilling yarn of famous figures gone bad, amazing powers and humanity's fate hanging by a thread, it garnered numerous praise and devoted fans. Three long years later, the cry for more was answered. But this time, three sisters possessed the paper manipulating abilities and Ms. Readman was still missing. Welcome to Read Or Die: The TV.

Director Kouji Masunari brought back most of the team behind the initial anime. The big change, in addition to three heroines, was the replacement of Studio Deen with J.C. Staff for the animation duties. Both studios have done themselves proud with the work they did for this franchise. Hardcore Otaku can have late night debates to which one is the better.

In creating R.O.D.: The TV, the team posited "What if we combined 'Charlie's Angels' with cat-girls?" The result was the three sister heroines (though they do not have cat ears or tails). What they do have are impressive paper manipulation skills, unique personalities and endless watchability. The entire project reeks of sophistication and devotion. Action is smooth and well animated, the direction is taunt and the soundtrack perfect. But the best treat is that it carries through all 7 volumes.

R.O.D.: The TV is worthy successor to Read Or Die. It continues the story without repeating itself, introduces new characters that we care about and does it all with the same polish and style as its predecessor. And that is the epitome of a job done right.

Sakura Wars OAV 1
Link: Sakura Wars OAV 1
Sakura Wars OAV 1 Based on the hit Sega game and featuring the talents of some of Anime's best (Satoru Akahori - Sorcerer Hunters & Kousuke Fujishima - Oh My Goddess; You're Under Arrest) Sakura Wars is very enjoyable. Production values are high, performances are strong and an interesting story all add to the quality of this video. Sakura Wars is a worthy addition to any anime collection.

The color styling and drawing of this anime are of the highest quality, whether you watch the VHS or DVD. Character design is beautiful, and the mechanical works (featuring intriguing uses of steam power) are well thought out and fun to watch.

Spriggan
Link: Spriggan
Spriggan Ever since 1988, when Akira first took Japan and the world by storm, people have been searching for its successor. Whether Spriggan is that film depends on what aspects of Akira you valued most. If Akira's combination of science-fiction fantasy and action-adventure are what you believe made that film great, then Spriggan will please you. If, on the other hand, you are more drawn to deep philosophical questions like those presented by Akira, the Matrix trilogy or Neon Genesis Evangelion, then you may find Spriggan not so entertaining.

Based on a manga by Hiroshi Takashige and Ryoji Minagawa, Spriggan is filled with non-stop action, fantastic battle sequences and thrilling moments. The movie has a similar look and feel to Akira, which may be due to Akira's creator's, Katsuhiro Otomo, involvement as general supervisor. The artwork by Studio 4C (The Matrix Animations, Memories) is detailed and easy on the eyes. Music, pacing and the plot are all fast, rich and engaging.

Spriggan is 90 minutes of electrifying animation guaranteed to leave any anime fan happy.

Tenchi The Movie 2
Link: Tenchi The Movie 2
Tenchi The Movie 2 The second of three Tenchi movies, The Daughter of Darkness is a solid production. It has all of the zany high-jinks, love quarrels and action that fans of the series expect. It also gives more insight into the lives (and relationships) of the popular characters, though in true Tenchi fashion, nothing is openly explained, confirmed or resolved.

The animation is top notch and the production values on the DVD that was reviewed were superb. The English voice acting also deserves recognition for its quality. All in all, an entertaining and well produced film.

The Cat Returns
Link: The Cat Returns
The Cat Returns Based on a story by Hayao Miyazaki, this is a delightful and enchanting tale about a young teenage girl, Haru, who has to find herself after she is swept up in an Alice in Wonderland like adventure. Like almost all of Miyazaki's films (though he did not direct this movie), there is magic (Haru is transformed into a cat-girl at one point), high adventure and a spirit-lifting story about making that sometimes difficult transition from child to adult.

All in all, this is a sweet and wonderful film. Some will grouse at the animation quality, which though not on the level of Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke, it is quite lovely. More likely is that this will become a favorite film of many children and the young at heart.

The Vision of Escaflowne
Link: The Vision of Escaflowne
The Vision of Escaflowne "Was it all just a dream? Or a vision? No, it all really happened, all right. It all began on that day I asked the tarot cards if I'd find love." With those few words, one of the greatest anime series ever made begins.

The Vision of Escaflowne is an amazing achievement. A story of destiny and love set in a world of science and magic, it is highly entertaining. Featuring the talents of the creators of Macross and Gundam, it is filled with action, intrigue and incredible imagination. The score alone is the best since Geinoh Yamashirogumi's work on Akira. It is a must for any anime fan.

The Vision of Escaflowne is filled with stunning animation, incredible design and backgrounds and moves at a breathless pace. The story is so rich viewers can watch it multiple times and find something new each time. The Vision of Esacflowne is a truly rewarding experience.

Z Mind
Link: Z Mind
Z Mind Z Mind is a chic retro giant robo show that deftly balances humor, action, and intrigue. The show uses the basic structure of the giant robo show - one evil organization sending monster after monster, transformation sequences, and the shouting out of attack names - but gives them all a modern twist. The animation is fluid and the character designs are pleasing (though the decoration on girls? battlesuits is a little questionable). The special effects are nicely handled as well. All in all, Z mind is six episodes of fun and excitement for any giant robo fan.
